Hey Rafael,

Just yesterday I noticed the field ordering with H264 for the first time. I was making a half-sized movie from a 720p timeline all made from stills, so there was no footage to screw up field order, but I noticed in the QT settings that frame reordering was set by default, and I couldn’t find a way to turn it off. But my movie looked fine, so go figure…

FYI I have a Canon A1, and I can play back 60i footage shot on a Z1U. Don’t think the progressive modes can play back on anything but a Canon, but it seems the 60i footage is somewhat inter-brand compatible.

Your HDV footage will have to be downconverted to get it on the DSR-11.

If it makes your point any stronger, as you know we have pretty much the same computer with a Kona LH in them, and I usually work in 8bit and even ProRes, and I have no complaints either. On the other desk I have a 2.4 MBP with a SATA 1tb RAID and it ain’t that much faster.

Yes, that makes sense, but I imagine it takes some getting used to working with it. I guess you have to think in twos when you think of how many frames for a transition, how long a clip should be etc.

I know I have to adjust to this when working in 23.98, which I rarely do, but I am conditioned to think of time in 30 fps, kinda like a habit.

Any other gotchyas with 59.94 I should be aware of?

Wait a minute, isn’t the difference between 640×480 and 720×480 a square pixel issue? If that’s true, then which is truly distorted? Cameras shoot at 720, isn’t 640 the square pixel representation of this? Hate to seem dopey, but I never really paid attention to this issue before. Everything I’ve worked with has been 720.

Can someone offer a technical explanation?

I have an A1, and until last week before trying the ProRes deal (which BTW works fantastic) I always captured native HDV via FW. FCP is persnickity about it, the camera must be set to HDV playback standard, and you must plug it in and turn it on before you launch the log and capture, but it should work then, and you should get all your time code.

You can put your native HDV into a ProRes or 8 bit timeline, render and go. Works great for SD.
