  • HDV footage to Sony DSR-11?

Posted by Kenny Powerass on November 29, 2007 at 6:28 am

I’ve just started working in HDV. I have the media files delivered to me on an external drive as I don’t have an HDV deck. My main output is always to DVD, but before I moved to HDV I normally backed each sequence up to DVCAM via a Sony DSR-11. Is there a way to properly keep a backup copy of my HDV sequences using the DSR-11? Or do I have to start shopping for an HDV deck?
    Thanks!

The DSR-11 is a DVCAM deck…it will only play out a DV and DVCAM signal, and only record DVCAM…it will not record nor playback HDV. For that you need the new SOny HDV decks. And they MUST be Sony if the camera used was a Sony camera. HDV formats differ greatly.

FYI I have a Canon A1, and I can play back 60i footage shot on a Z1U. Don’t think the progressive modes can play back on anything but a Canon, but it seems the 60i footage is somewhat inter-brand compatible.

Your HDV footage will have to be downconverted to get it on the DSR-11.

    Have a wonderful day.

HDV’s not that large. It might be easier to get an external drive and just export a QT movie of your finished sequence. Pretty much the same as a tape backup.
