Yes, the Y cable on Decklink is used for composite. I have an SP and I capture component from VHS and DVDs via loop through a JVC DV deck with component in/out. I use an Ocean Matrix AB component switcher to go between that and my Beta deck. Works great.

It’s just too funny, beecause my daughter had a homemade DVD that she wanted a copy of last week, and I made one using FCPs capture from uncontrolled device, then compressing and authoring through DVDSP, and a half hour show took about 4 hours. Plus, it lost all the menus etc.
Then on Saturday I just stumbled on Kens article, and to copy the DVD with all it’s attributes took all of a half hour!!!
So always glad to share…

You can easily copy a DVD on your Mac desktop with Disk Utility. Here’s how:

On your rates question, if you’re in a major market, it’s probably anywhere from 50 to 125 an hour. Also depends on how much skill you have. Otherwise, sniff around your competitors, often you can see their rate schedule on their Websites.

Option click on the rubbeband on the audio waveform to create two keyframes near the end and drag the first one down to the bottom. Or you can apply a crossfade audio transition and set it’s duration to whatever you like. This last will require enough handles on the clip tho.

I work occasionally at an agency which has a similar library of footage which several people access. It’s all kept in a dedicated drive which is backed up. One key to sanity with this situation is a solid naming scheme used to organize and catalog everything. If you do this properly you will be able to just digitize all of the eight hours by subject or whatever and it will be very easy for anyone to use in as many projects as you want.

I’m using a 6×8 with a 23″ cinema display, a 19″ LCD for my bins etc, and my 14″ NTSC monitor is part of my desktop too and I get around it all fine.
