You could add one of these for blu-ray if you have to have it: https://www.mcetech.com/blu-ray/

April 3, 2007 at 9:50 pm in reply to: URGENT – random green lines and dots when renderingI have had this problem, not just with Blackmagic but also with Cinewave. It seems to be tied to the Apple uncompressed 10 bit codec, especially when combined with anything with an alpha channel. I usually use 8 bit because of this. It probably won’t be resolved until Apple fixes the 10 bit codec. You could try the Blackmagic 10 bit RGB codec if you can deal with the color conversion and lack of real-time effects.

This can be worked around. I have the same deck as you but work on a Mac. I usually capture 720P30 either converting on the fly via the Multibridge to DVCproHD from the deck’s component analog outputs or import the HDV directly via firewire. The key to conversion reliability seems to be using the RS422 deck control. Either way I can play back a 720p30 timeline using Blackmagic’s 720p59.94 display setting. I have made custom presets to make it easier. I have also had success with 24p but do not use it regularly.

Hm… seems to only apply to PAL as my edits to tape are now exact as of the 6.1 update in NTSC.

Just in case anyone is wondering this deck does down convert 720p to 480i NTSC via firewire.

Try this- no filter needed!
1) Duplicate a clip and place it above original on the timeline.
2) Add Gaussian blur to the upper clip.
3) Enable composite mode on upper clip- “screen” for pro mist or “soft light” for black pro.Adjusting the amount of blur and using different composite modes can produce a lot of subtile or not so subtile effects.
If you still want a filter, I am very fond of the Nattress Film Effects series

February 14, 2007 at 11:01 pm in reply to: Hardware Suggestions: External RAID-5 for Final Cut Studio 5.1 with AJA Kona 3The Caldigit HD444 will do RAID10, which is the standard config for the Apple Xserve RAID. Obviously SATA and Fiberchannel work very differently, but it is certainly worth a look. I was originally thinking of a fiberchannel array for capacity, speed, reliability and to get the @#$%@#% thing out of the edit bay. I am now thinking of getting something like the Caldigit and putting it and the Mac in another room via a KVM extender.

Garage Band has ducking buit in. It does not link to FCP the way Soundtrack does but it is certainly cheap and you can watch video while recording audio with it. Wouldn’t hurt to demo it and see if it works for you.

[Post Office Video] “BTW, can Kona products record and play back audio at the same time the way Avids can?”
You mean real-time playback of the video / audio you’re recording? Yep”
I mean something like this: In Soundtrack Pro record some voice, add some music etc. Now enable recording on another track and record new VO while the talent listens to the other tracks for reference. Avids and my old Cinewave could do this, Blackmagic cannot. What about AJA?
