Make sure your sequence settings (codecs) match your source codecs. You can see what codecs they are in the browser window if you scroll to the right.

A lot of people think that they need a high powered system to edit.

I do have a desktop that is fully built as my main system but during emergencies, I use my 2.16 ghz 15″ MBP w/ only 3 gigs of ram to edit P2 material. It runs fine.

When you start doing a lot of multi-tasking, and be honest yourself, thats when you need a fast system.

Generally, when I am editing for a client, I would have multiple applications running and I’m constantly switching between them

    FCP – Obvious
    AE – Titling
    PS – Titling
iTunes – Audio for the piece
    MS Excel – Notes

    Hope this helps.

A little off-topic but kind of related to the question you asked…

When editing video, it is a good rule of thumb to keep all your source files on a separate “render drive”. You only want to install software onto your laptop’s hard drive.

    sorry, i meant 1080i/24f

a problem that i am now encountering is that the clips are “choppy” in the fcp browser. the source file plays smoothly, and it plays smoothly premiere as well.

fcp set up as dvcpro hd 1080. when i drag the clip to the timeline, fcp automatically adjusts the timeline to match the clip.

mac pro intel quad core @ 2.67
    16 gig ram
source files are captured on separate HD

Thanks. I kinda figured that was the case. So it’s not really a true JAM SYNC feature huh?

    i have a xha1 and i edit with a macbook pro.

    2.0 ghz intel core duo
3 gb ram (will soon upgrade to 4)

i would suggest you use an external hd that uses a raid system to store all of your work when capturing to lessen the risk of your main hd crashing under heavy workloads

not sure what that is but i also know the only MAJOR difference is that the XH G1 has a master sync gen output so if u were to shoot with multiple cameras, you can hook it up to a sync gen console.

Can’t ever go wrong with a 24p camera. Look at the movie “28 days later”. It was shot on an XL2.
