I do not believe that the 1200A can INSERT edit. Almost sure. I don’t even think it can do an assemble edit.

I am certain that all Avids currently only support crash record with this deck.

You could rent a HD1700, which should do the trick, if supported by Avid.

OR…since the 1200A has a TC IN…you could lay your show off in one pass using the Adrenaline’s LTC out to get solid time code. Just a guess, as I have never used Avid’s crash record setting and not sure how you would set accurate time code in a crash situation.

Well, the best way to learn is to dive right in. So, I will skip the step by step lesson, unless you care to return the favor with detailed instructions on how to replace the mass air flow sensor on a 1985 Porsche 928.

BUT, in Illustrator you will find plug ins like “punk and bloat” and a couple of others you can apply to your letters once you turn them from text to paths. This gives them the wiggles. Rember to create outlines first, there should be a good explanation of all of the above in the manuals and online help.

Create three or four different versions or variations of your text, saving each to a different file. You should then rasterize them, turning them into typical image files in Photoshop. A tif or pict should do. Bring those into the Avid and make a bunch of edits which cycle through the different images.

OR, my preference, create a quicktime movie in After Effects which does the same.

There are some shortcuts which can help you cycle through images. Sequentialy numbers image files to make a pict or tga sequence is one. There are others as well.

ISIS cannot handle the throughput you need. It may at sometime in the future, but for now HD is limited to the LOWER DNXHD resolutions. IMHO, other Unity systems are not price nor performance competitive. UNLESS you absolutely need project level integration. For some workflows, simple volume level sharing is more than enough to get the job done. It is simpler to manage as well.

We have had a 6TB Terrablock for 1 1/2 years and are very happy with it. Pound for pound, it is a great deal. It is flexible and nearly bullet proof. I will admitt, it can be a bit clumsy cross platform Mac / PC sharing. But there are some options there. Hopefully the future holds some solutions too.

The 4 Gbit fibre option should be robust enough to handle most of what you need.

Out of curiousity…what do you like and dislike about your Terrablock?

I vote for a tower. Laptop editing is for the birds.

We have built a nifty little HPxw8000 with an internal 4 drive SATA array. So, no external drives to deal with. Sure it is a bit heavier, but the performance is great. And you can go dual monitors if you wish. Plus you get the man sized keyboard and mouse. I can work much faster and much more accurate this way.

We are also building our own custom monitor “bridge”, which will contain three 17″ inch LCD monitors. Two for the CPU, one for video. This should fit nicely inside a custom case.

So for hauling around two packages, you get a lot of horsepower, options and “cool factor”

    Hi Bob,

Quick “moron zone” question about the use of LCD computer monitors for HD video purposes.

You, like many others, recommend or suggest that using a Dell, Sony or Apple LCD is acceptable for some purposes. I am also romanced by that thought. But, I notice that quite a few of the suggested monitors like those from HP and Sony are 16:10. How is the difference between 16:10 and 16:9 handled? Does the monitor do anything special? Should I do anything to compensate? Are there options here.

    Michael,

You guys really need to push for a better way to get this done. The switching project types routine is also “for the birds”, whatever that means.

Please tell me Symphony Nitris is going to be much more elegant when working with varying frame rates and resolutions (all SD and HD).

Think everyone would prefer a timelime centric approach, rather than a forcing everything to common formart on a project or clip level.

August 24, 2005 at 12:38 am in reply to: Plugin Better than Animatte??

IMHO…there is no plug in better than Animatte. Which is not to say Animatte is super-terrific. But, it is integrated.

The best bet to add Animatte like tools to Xpress Pro is with Boris RED. This is a plug in which will run on almost all Avid systems. It is an AVX 1.5 plug in. So it works on old and new systems.

For those on the latest major Avid release, Boris Contiuum Complete 4 (BCC4) adds animatte like capabilities with an integrated bezier animatible “pixel chooser”, in all it’s effects. It requires AVX 2. However, layering may be more challenging with BCC4 than Red.

This is a limitation of Avid’s effects architecture. You cannot combine matte and fill. The proper method is as described above, step in and apply the 3D warp to reposition your fill. Then make the same adjustments MANUALLY to your Animatte.

You may check and see if plug ins like Boris Red will allow the above to be performed as one procedure. However all your layering will need to be done in the interface for that plug in. Once you use it or demo it, you will see what i mean.

July 20, 2005 at 3:18 pm in reply to: Avid Symphony: Rolling Title

    Avids absolutely suck at this.

Try different speeds of roll and various font size.

Titles created in Marquee seem to do a bit better.

It is a shame that in 2005 our mighty Avids have problems with the simplest of tasks.

This is really a DVE function and Avids are notoriously poor at anything involving vertical motion.

Could I sell you on a horizontal credit crawl instead.

July 12, 2005 at 10:21 pm in reply to: AVID LanShare EX

I strongly recomend you also look at the Terrablock from Facilis. We were considering a LanShare EX and opted for the Terrablock instead. Depends what your needs are.

Nothing gives you the project level integration an Avid Unity based product will.

But there are some other solutions which offer more raw bandwidth and 1:1 streams per seat, more availabile fiber channel seats and greater amount of storage for the same price as a LanshareEX or less.

File level SANS like Lanshare sure do offer a lot of flexibility without any true access restrictions. Volume level SANS like Terrablock restrict write access to one user per volume (partition) at a time. This is not as restrictive as it sounds, but may be a headache for some workflows. However, volume level SANS are typically much easier to maintain.

Editshare is another product deserving of a look if you desire ethernet only connectivity.
