URGENT AVID HD editing help required
Posted by Anshul Doshi on November 8, 2005 at 6:56 pmDear All
I have a project started today. We are shooting Panasonic Varicam 720/24P/60 format. this is a true 24p shoot.
I have used the Adrenaline HD to digitse my stuff using the 1080/24P format. This is the output that my deck the HD 1200 also gives.
My problem is starting with monitoring the output for this project. I have a normal composite monitor which is showing the image cropped etc. Do you know of any settings.
Do you know if i need any other monitor
Thanks and Regards

November 8, 2005 at 11:29 pmYou have many problems –
First, if you have a TRUE 24p project, and not 23.98, you will be in trouble for the duration of the project. Jobs that finish in video should be shot in 23.98, not 24.To display the HD image, you must buy a DVI computer monitor, or a monitor that will display HD that has analog RGB connectors on it. You can’t do this job with your composite TV monitor. the only way to fake it is to hook up the composite TV to the composite video connector on the Panasonic AJ-HD1200A video out, and monitor the AVID ADrenaline thru the deck.
If you look at the back of your AVID Adrenlaine HD, you will see on the HD board a DVI connector, and a RGB HD output. You can plug this into a Dell 2405FPW (about $1000), or a HP 2335 (about $1500), and many other monitors including the Apple 23″ Cinema display.
If you are cutting a REAL HD job, with an expensive AVID Adrenaline, and an expensive
Panasonic HD VTR, I can only assume you can afford to get a monitor. The best monitor to get is the Sony SDM-P234b, that will scan at 48Hz for your 24p image.Bob Zelin

November 8, 2005 at 11:30 pmI just reread your post, and saw your concern about the cropped image.
You DO know that HD is a 16×9 format, and not a 4:3 format like NTSC video, so it will scan differently – right ?bob Zelin

Thanks for your help
Yes, I know HD is 16:9, and what I was trying to ascertain also that if I took a regular broadcast monitor like a 14″ sony L2 which also had a RGB connection and 16:9 setting, can I use it with the adrenaline HD
Thanks and Regards

November 9, 2005 at 8:12 pmHi Bob,
Quick “moron zone” question about the use of LCD computer monitors for HD video purposes.
You, like many others, recommend or suggest that using a Dell, Sony or Apple LCD is acceptable for some purposes. I am also romanced by that thought. But, I notice that quite a few of the suggested monitors like those from HP and Sony are 16:10. How is the difference between 16:10 and 16:9 handled? Does the monitor do anything special? Should I do anything to compensate? Are there options here.

November 9, 2005 at 10:45 pmIt is my opinion that if you have a Sony PVM-14L2 or PVM20L2, you will suffer on a HD project. It is my advice that you either try to get your hands on a Sony PVM-14L5/1 or a PVM-20L5/1 (now discontinued), or get one of these cheap DVI monitors. Remember, the Dell is probably under $1000 with the right discount code. the PVM-14L2 will not scan to HD frequencies, the L5 will. And of course, the computer monitors will too.
