[Michael Slowe] “Chris, I feel that it’s safer to shoot in the new (greatly improved) Sony codec, XAVC”
That’s interesting. Could you tell me why you feel it’s safer?

You said it looked great in the timeline, but not in the exported QuickTime file, so I would suspect a codec issue during export. What codec did you use for your export file?

May 21, 2011 at 3:48 am in reply to: Apple ProRes 422 HQ different result from one machine to another[Chris Borjis] “the G5 has a different implementation of ProRes.”
(smacks head hard) And we accept this why? I suspected architecture was the problem, but dadgummit it’s still frustrating.
Thank you.

May 20, 2011 at 8:45 pm in reply to: Apple ProRes 422 HQ different result from one machine to anotherI’ve had the same thing happen. I had two Macs render the same compositions in After Effects to ProRes 422. One Mac is a G5 with FCP 6, the other an Intel Mac with FCP 7. The Intel rendered with a darker gamma.
On the Intel Mac, switching the ProRes codec’s gamma setting between “None” and “Automatic” doesn’t make a difference. On the PowerMac, there is no gamma setting.
I haven’t found a solution yet.

You also might try a great program called multiAVCHD. It can take media files and recreate a proper file/folder structure that Log and Transfer can recognize.
I used it a few days ago when a client sent us a bunch of .m2ts files, orphaned from their folder structure. After using multiAVCHD, Log and Transfer read the files perfectly.
And best of all, it’s free!

I’m surprised at the number of supposedly “professional” post houses that send files for broadcast tape output with audio levels peaking at zero.

November 15, 2010 at 6:33 pm in reply to: Overlays disappear after QuickTime Conversion exportI don’t actually want the overlay graphic on the final still. I want it clean, but the overlay guides my file naming.
Dang. I just tried it on FCP 7.0.2 on OSX 10.6.4. The problem exists there, too. I don’t understand the logic of why overlays must go away when exporting in this manner, but it looks like there’s naught to do about it. Looks like Jerry’s idea is the way to go.
Thanks, guys.

Actually, I’ve had the exact same problem lately, but with Final Cut 6 on a PowerMac with an Aja LHe card. Does anyone know what could cause that? I have already tried trashing prefs.

[Shane Ross] “Not until you are required to work in ProRes. That requires an Intel.”
I wouldn’t say “requires.” I work with ProRes on a PowerMac G5 (Late 2005) with no problems.
