I have been playing with running Snow Leopard in 64 bit mode. Most apps seem to run fine but I have had 2 serious issues in Final Cut Pro 7.03. The first is that my LaCie ESATA card does not work in that mode. I have read that there are some ESATA cards that will work in 64 bit mode but many will not so be sure to check. The other issue is that editing to beta tape via may Matrox MXO2 caused FCP to freeze when the edit to tape was complete. Don’t know if this is true with AJA or Blackmagic but definitely check before trying to do any work in 64 bit mode.

Since FCP isn’t a 64 bit application, and many aren’t (except the CS5 set), booting into 64 bit mode makes little to no sense anyway.

    Thanks for sharing.

I have an eSATA 2 port card from LaCie and was able to get it working with Snow Leopard by downloading drivers from a 3rd party site…it is bizarre, but I think mostly a LaCie issue.

So if I’m running snow leopard, how do I stop it from booting into 64 bit? Is it the default?

Its not the default. You have to specifically enable that via terminal

Actually, I’ve had the exact same problem lately, but with Final Cut 6 on a PowerMac with an Aja LHe card. Does anyone know what could cause that? I have already tried trashing prefs.

    Chris,
The latest drivers for the LaCie eSata card now support Snow Leopard.

The 12 cores default to 64 bit now. I finally figured out why frame sync would drop on edit to tape with aja kona 3. Booted in 32 bit and frame accuracy has returned.
