That’s a pretty impressive little program. I gave it a quick runthrough, and I like it a lot. Being able to spit out a BD without having to patch or hexedit anything is nice.

The top layer fade technique you mention seems so simple. Yet it’s amazing how many editors ignore it, choosing instead to apply dissolves to all the layers, causing some background elements to seep through foreground elements.

You see it at all levels, from bare-bones local commercials to Hollywood studio productions. I guess it’s an example of how easy-to-use NLEs have made some of us forget basic editing principles.

Are you sure that the standard TV and MacBook screen have video levels set properly? If it looks right on some monitors and not on others, it’s hard to pin the blame on the encode without knowing what’s properly calibrated and what isn’t.

One way to check your encode would be to take the MPEG-2 file and convert it to a QuickTime file using something like MPEG Streamclip and bring it into Final Cut and compare it with your original sequence.

Well, guys…it’s not popping anymore, and I haven’t the slightest idea why. I was playing around in a completely unrelated area, namely trying out the AJA Kona TV in conjunction with the QT timecode burn-in setting in the control panel, and playing QT files with it. After that digression, I discovered that the system was no longer popping when jumping in and out of FCP.

Makes no sense, but it’s definitely not the first time I’ve accidentally solved a problem without knowing how I did it.

    Thanks for your help, everyone.

[David Roth Weiss] “Are you running analog audio through a mixer or not?”

Yes, I’m using a standard mixer setup where all analog audio coming into FCP goes through the mixer, and the output of FCP goes to one of the stereo returns on the mixer, which we monitor using its solo button. The mixer is an Alesis Studio 24.

[Le Coyote] “is there phantom power applied to the inputs in the mixer?”

    No, phantom power is off.
