What city are you working in? What are the local shops doing? Answer this and you pretty much have your answer.
I agree with others that it is a pretty good idea to know everything, which I’m sure you agree with, as well. As to the system you build up 12 tons of muscle memory with, it really depends on the micro system you are part of. How ever much I might like to give Premiere a go, the answer for me–in Los Angeles–seems clearly to be Avid, though I suppose it is possible that Premiere might take hold in some boutique promo houses because of AE.
So look around your town and start asking.

I was, of course, being facetious. IMHO, Gerald has a rather optimistic view of the new freedom and the new power the new tools bring to the new creatives.
Interesting article, btw, though I think it lacks a little perspective. The “creative world’ has always been a bit dicey.

Dude, Final Cut Pro doesn’t bring anything new to the table in that light, whatever Apple’s marketing department might say. The difference in price between FCS and FCP X represents less than 3 almost adequate lunches for an extremely tiny, tiny cast and crew.

It looks like an interesting movie, but I think you are mistaken about it being about FCP X’s target audience. I have no idea what “Tiny Furniture” was cut on, but I don’t think it could be delivered using FCP X. Red is currently unsupported, natively, in FCP X, so I’m guessing Ted Schilowitz would point us in the direction of Adobe or Avid. There is no reason any of these creatives would choose FCP X over one of the other NLEs.

I am piggishly ignorant on Avid, i’m just unable to go there.
“If all things in my world were equal, I might have decided to drift towards Adobe as it seems to be most like FCP, and I will certainly spend more time using it. But in the LA Entertainment Biz, Avid has never not been king, though FCS really gave it a run for the money. It was a real serious rivalry that both Avid and FCS users gained from, though, sadly, I know many Avid editors who continued to sneer. FCP X has been rather roundly rejected for not coming out of the gate as a whole NLE. The safest bet around here is to migrate to Avid, especially since Avid has been making serious changes and delivering generous deals. However attractive Premiere might be, it is just not the overall wise choice for the muscle memory machine here. And, I have to say, being back on an Avid has brought back some good memories, and there are more than a few things I do like better than on FCS, though FCS was (and still is) a terrific experience.

I agree.
[Steve Connor] “I don’t find having multiple projects open a problem, it’s very fast and easy to navigate between projects. Not as easy as clicking on a tab, but not a huge inconvenience for me.
“In FCS, I often take the multiple timelines a step further, keeping my cut open on the left monitor and placing timelines that act as bins open on the right. I find this even faster than tabs.
