    Hi Richard,

Thank you so much for quick and detailed reply. I think this is exactly what we’re going to do.

Was there a systematic way you double checked your project to make sure everything (all the cuts, tc, media ends and starts, etc.) was the same? The reason why I ask is because we already have a lot of assemblies and cuts that we would like to preserve for the new editor.

    Thanks,

Hi Michael, thanks for the quick reply.

The reason to upgrade is simply that they’re going to be editing on their own system that has a newer version (FCP 6). That would be the only reason why we would be upgrading and not for the new features.

    Hey Zoee,

Yeah, unless you don’t want to go any higher than 6.0.4 then I would just do a software update from the Apple Menu.

If that doesn’t work, it might be something with the hard drive that you are trying to install the update to.

    Thanks,

  • …Or better yet, do you think pationing the 2 backup drives to match the original set of 6 drives and then copying everything over with the exact same names and structure would work?

    Thanks again, Nick!

  • Hi Nick,

Thank you so much for your response on both LAFCPUG and CC.

Is there a way to do that simply by naming the subfolders within one of the backup drives the names of the original drives?

The reason why I ask is because we originally did the backup the way you stated (simply copying and pasting everything over) but because our original set of drives consist of 6 different sized drives with media spread all over the place, we wanted to consolidate them onto 2 3tb drives. After copying and pasting the 6 drives onto 2 3tb drives (and giving them the exact same folder structure except now the original names of the drives are now the names of the root folders), we still had to reconnect and came across the media start/end problem. After getting that error message, one of our original sequences synched sound was thrown way off.

Is this possibly a bug that FCP fixes in updates past 5.1.4? If so, would you suggest updating in the middle of a project?

Thank you again so much for your help. I really appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Hi Alex,

Thanks for posting this up. We just came across the exact same problem. The only difference is that

    1) we are using FCP 5.1.4
    2) we shot on SD, 24p (Panasonic DVX-100)
    3) we are only getting a couple of seconds of handles at the end of some of our media.

We have over 250 hours of footage and have already started cutting the project but are preparing for an extra editor to come on board. After doing the media manager copy onto the new drives for the new editor, we then noticed the same problem you had with MM adding extra handles. We noticed that it was adding 2 different types of things to our tails:

    1) a couple of seconds of dead frames (basically a still)
    2) overlapping footage from the proceeding clip

Since we shot in a different format from you, do you (or anyone else) think that MM re-compressing and then MM copying as you did would help?

Again, thank you so much for your post and I hope to hear from you soon.

    Thanks,

Whoops! Sorry about that. I don’t think I meant to repost this. For some reason it popped up when I wanted to add a new post and so I just pressed the button without thinking about it.

I’ve been out of the editing office for the week so I havne’t been able to try and reconnect the clips individually but your ideas sound about right. Once I test it, I’ll let you all know. Thanks again for the feedback!
