March 29, 2010 at 10:19 am in reply to: DNxHD 36 over Firewire from deck? And other stupid questions.Thank you for the responses guys.
As I thought, it requires us to hire pretty much a full complement of kit.
I’ve suggested that instead we digitise the SD at DV (as we normally would) and keep the DVCPROHD native over firewire.
I believe MC is happy having these formats mixed on the same timeline these days?
Thanks again,
Chris.

As everyone else has said, h.264 is not a viable format for editing with.
I’ve found the most robust way of sorting the problem, and to avoid and of FCP’s render file foibles, is to drop the clip on to a timeline with your own designated settings (as everyone else says, opt for pro-res), make sure that the timeline doesn’t automatically conform to the clip’s settings, and then export a quicktime movie.
You’ll then have a self contained quicktime, with no need for rendering, in high quality.

Hi John,
many thanks for the response. In order to import the XDCAM files at pro-res, do I use a setting in the sony file transfer utility? Or does it occur elsewhere in the import?
And do you know what kind of file sizes and bitrates are associated with pro-res – are they comparable to DV or are they much larger? I have to consider the capacity and capability of our editshare.
Thanks again,
Chris.

Hi,
I haven’t had that particular error before, but normally when I do have an issue using “get current sequence”, I resolve it like so:
In the EDL manager, click File->Open. Then navigate to a bin that contains nothing but the sequence from which you want to make an EDL (so you may have to create this bin for this purpose – be sure to close it or save it otherwise it will be empty)
Having set the tracks you want to import, after selecting the bin you will hopefully be able to create the EDL.
Good luck.

July 10, 2008 at 2:15 pm in reply to: Portrait photos imported into avid are stretched – how to avoid?Hello Kenton – thanks for that (helpful?) reply.
I’m glad you feel I should be getting a hard time…
So perhaps you would be kind enough to walk me through getting a high resolution scanned photograph into avid in a way that preserves its quality?
And I am stupid, so baby steps would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Are you using a mojo? If not the machine might be lacking enough grunt to keep them synced together if you keep jumping back and forth.
Definitely worth trying a switch to firwire tho.

That’s great, really appreciate it.
Now if there was only a way to bind alt+a/s to a single key…

February 21, 2008 at 10:10 pm in reply to: How to convert an NTSC sequence to a PAL one?Well, my friend and I have spent the last three hours closing gaps and stretching cuts – but I’m pretty sure that your advice set us up on a good footing.
If you’re ever in Bristol(Uk), Andy, I’ll buy you a pint.
Many thanks,
Chris.
