  • DV + XDCAM mixed media timeline – possible? Easy?

    Hi all,

I’m trying to figure out a workflow for a future job. A show is being shot with an XDCAM (unfortunately the coordinator can’t tell me if it’s EX or otherwise, but she says it will be SD). But they will also have some footage to be digitised in during the edit from DVCAM and Digibeta.

Is there a timeline/easy setup that will playback both the XDCAM footage and DV footage together? They don’t want to conform.

Would it be possible for the XDCAM files to be imported at DV res, and therefore have a completely DV timeline? Does this add significantly to the import time.

We aim to have the media stored on our editshare, so data rates will be important too.

Thanks for any help, I’m totally new to XDCAM.

    All the best,

    Chris.

I’d capture/convert all to Prores and edit in that format. Turning a higher quality signal (XDCAM) into DV makes no sense. Also, editing in a DV timeline will make any pix or graphics look terrible.

    Hi John,

many thanks for the response. In order to import the XDCAM files at pro-res, do I use a setting in the sony file transfer utility? Or does it occur elsewhere in the import?

And do you know what kind of file sizes and bitrates are associated with pro-res – are they comparable to DV or are they much larger? I have to consider the capacity and capability of our editshare.

    Thanks again,

    Chris.

Chris, I’m sorry, but I don’t have direct experience with XDCAM. Checkout this thread https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1037247#1037341 There are probably more you can search out on the Cow.

As for data rates, ProRes is 5 times that of DV. Here’s a link to a chart of data rates courtesy of Dulce. https://www.dulcesystems.com/html/video_space.html
