– dont exactly have the answer but reckon the answer lies in some kind of a switch as the instrument turns to smoke …… obvious comment but the point being it depends how quick you want the instruments to dissolve and how the musicians react…..

…………. if you can get away with a quick transition an startled musicians letting go and moving away in surprise it will be a lot easier I think especially if ‘magic warp’ or othyer effect can be used to cover the join….. but it needs to be shot for this of course…

I guess what I was expecting but was I was hoping ( worst case ) that it might be possible to apply effects to an adjustment layer / pre-compose it / then get it to work in scene so that it can be seen by the ray tracer ………

——- I got a huge performance boost by putting in 3 graphics cards though not sure if that helps much on DOF and blur calculations..

————— if you are simply changing the sky then I reckon its worth trying a luma key / chroma key which I reckon will do most of it then you will just need to fiddle with the left hand corner a bit…..

—- for low budget version suggest…

1 ) shoot cyclist on location as per ref against a clear sky ( as much as possible ) so that the cyclist is essentially in silhouette.

2 ) luma key cyclist and landscape over a still frame of sunset.

3 ) add an animating lens flare to sell the shot.

4 ) if you have any footage of birds that will key maybe add a few as silhouettes as well……..

…………… wont win any prizes but if done thoughtfully with a few tweaks can look very effective.
