Final deliverable is an AMA-1080p Solid State Video Player. Essentially a little black box like a TiVo.

Thanks for the responses thus far folks!

October 3, 2009 at 6:02 pm in reply to: Negative Scanning

    ‘sup.

I edit programs for PBS. Rule of thumb for scanning – both HD and SD:
300dpi is fine for close-ups of people and items.
600dpi is good for photos of WS of whole-bodies because you’ll probably use Stage Tools to zoom-in to faces.
1200dpi for extreme wide shots that you know you’ll need to zoom in to.
1200 dpi for Negatives and slides because you can fit so many of them onto one scan. THEN open each full scan in Photoshop and crop & name each individual photo.

Note — this is very time consuming because of the slow scanning, but with doc work you’ll often not be able to get a second chance to scan things on-location. IF however you have unlimited access and can re-scan at any time, then go ahead and scan EVERYTHING at 150dpi. Offline editing happens in SD, so why waste the time scanning and rendering until you know which images make the cut?

I have to stop using the phrase “rule of thumb”. Its etymology dates back to medieval times where it was legal to beat your wife with a stick that was no thicker than the diameter of your thumb… just baaad connotations there.

August 14, 2009 at 7:05 pm in reply to: Movies with bad editing

[Jay Huubs] “can someone suggest some movies with bad editing?”

Sure! – Any movie you’ve ever gone to see and:
    – looked at your watch!
    – said “this is dragging”
    – said “OMG, this is REALLY dragging”
    – was originally a Dean Koontz book

    …or was titled:
    – King Kong (P.Jackson)
    – The English Patient
    – There Will Be Blood
    – Waterworld
    – Troll 2
    – Ishtar
    – Showgirls
    – Over the Top (Stallone – remember his arm wrestling movie?)
    – Gumball Rally
    – Dragon Storm
    …I could go on…

HOWEVER, it is eternally important to watch these types of films. Doing so identifies what to do and what not to do. If you watch perfection all the time, you’ll never reach it!

Thanks for all the help folks! We upgraded to the following combo – which the nice folka at Avid regard as the “smoothest-running” as far as compatability of versions.

    Interplay 1.2.3 — Unity5.1.1 — MC2.8.3
