I have 3 mac pro 4,1’s and recently upgraded them to get better performance.
Here’s what I added: (already all have 32gb of ram which is “sufficient” for 4k workflow as long as you have a fast raid)

USB 3 add on card.

Get the fastest/most recent/mac compatible Nvidia card you can (4gb DDR5 memory onboard)

Samsung Evo 850 SSD system disk. I can’t tell you how pleasing it is going from a boot time
of just over 2 minutes down to less than 15 seconds. That and applications load MUCH faster.

Unfortunately you can’t just add a card for thunderbolt…the chipset on the mainboard
has to support it so no thunderbolt for me, but I do use a mac mini with thunderbolt to
copy media on those rare occasions a client has a thunderbolt only drive.

I know it works when switching back and forth between Premiere and After Effects…and Speedgrade as well (I think)

but ya as others said unfortunately, resolve hogs the frame buffer.

I do this often for DCP exports.

New custom sequence, with multichannel mono audio tracks (6 total)
important you choose multichannel and NOT 5.1…for some reason it lowers the audio volume on export.

Then bring in each track in order of smpte specs:

L
R
C
Lfe
Ls
Rs

Then go to the mixer window and pan each track.
L
R
L
R
L
R

Also make sure you check each box (in the mixer) that indicates
L & R is mapped to1 & 2
C & Lfe is mapped to 3 & 4
Ls & Rs is mapped to 5 & 6
(this keeps them all seperated without combining them all)

Export the quicktime, in the audio options choose multichannel 24-bit.

This is what I do and it works. Hopefully i didn’t leave out a step.

You might search more threads in the forum going back, I know I posted
a more detailed version of this some time ago as well as others.

Rick what is the data transfer rate of your Raid 1 setup?

And if anyone out there reading this has, in fact been able to play XAVC (or RED) 4k footage in a 4k sequence
with full resolution enabled, with perfect smooth playback (rendered or not), I’d like to hear your specs as well.

I get by just fine playing/editing at lower resolution playback and my clients don’t care and understand
it’s bleeding edge tech. 9 times out of 10 it’s a 1080p deliverable in the end.

I have a similar setup but mac based. video storage is raid 5.

I get choppy playback after adding any lumetri effect (including just a lut) in 1080P (with a 4k source)
but rendering it makes it play smoothly.

On 4k XAVC footage in a 4k sequence though, I only get smooth playback when lowering the resolution in the program monitor.

The articles I’ve read on achieving smooth 4k playback sequences seem to have been accomplished with
an SSD raid storage solution.

The footage you describe is exactly what our Sony FS7 shoots and in 4k.

I can tell you the 16gb will help, but it won’t be much better. To edit
reasonably smooth and have a responsive edit experience you will need
at least 32gb of ram. (at least in my experience with our systems)

I have several 2009 octo core mac towers and they didn’t play nice
with the FS7 4k footage (or RED for that matter) until we upgraded
to 32gb of ram. of course a solid high end gpu helps too and in
that regard it’s recommended the Nvidia or ATI card have 4gb of ddr5 memory
if working regularly with 4k footage.

I have 2gb Quadro 4000’s as well as a GTX 680.

FS7 4k footage plays smoothly at the lower resolution settings in the program monitor
but is never butter smooth at full.

you don’t need to transcode.

I do commercial production and been exclusively on premiere since CS 5.5

I have not transcoded a single piece of footage since switching to premiere and one of our sony cameras
records AVCHD.

I’ve noticed poor playback performance any time Lumetri f/x are used from day 1.

You’ll need to render the entire sequence if you want smooth playback with f/x on them.

Or did you render and still have problems?
