Around 18-20 fps playback. What do i need to upgrade?
Hi all!
Recently i bought a Sony a7S II. When in edit some simple clips in XAVC S 4K my computer struggles with the playback, especially when i put a lut on it. Here are my computer specs:
Windows 10 Pro
32GB Ram
GeForce GTX 770
SSD 840 Samsung Evo 256GB: Scratch Disk
SSD 840 Samsung Evo 128GB: Windows and software
2x 1tb hdd wd in Raid 1 for projects en media footageWhat do i need to upgrade? I was thinking to change de raid 1 for ssd or upgrade the videocard?
What do you guys think? Are there more people editing with the XAVC S 4K footage and what hardware do you use?

I have a similar setup but mac based. video storage is raid 5.
I get choppy playback after adding any lumetri effect (including just a lut) in 1080P (with a 4k source)
but rendering it makes it play smoothly.On 4k XAVC footage in a 4k sequence though, I only get smooth playback when lowering the resolution in the program monitor.
The articles I’ve read on achieving smooth 4k playback sequences seem to have been accomplished with
an SSD raid storage solution. -

Hi Rick,
Your best bet is to check your task manager to see where the bottleneck is.
It is likely is the CPU, but it could also be the GFX card. If you only have one or 2 clips on the timeline, I doubt the SSDs aren’t keeping up.
The latest version of Premiere also allows you to easily transcode for proxy editing, so I would try that first.

Rick what is the data transfer rate of your Raid 1 setup?
And if anyone out there reading this has, in fact been able to play XAVC (or RED) 4k footage in a 4k sequence
with full resolution enabled, with perfect smooth playback (rendered or not), I’d like to hear your specs as well.I get by just fine playing/editing at lower resolution playback and my clients don’t care and understand
it’s bleeding edge tech. 9 times out of 10 it’s a 1080p deliverable in the end. -
Yes, now i put the resolution at 1/4 or even 1/8 to view the video’s. Run a hdd test tool: Read 79,3 mb/s Write 103,8 mb/s.
I’ve watch the stats in the task manager. CPU gets around 80% at max and average about 65% when playing back my timeline at full resolution, so thats fine i think. The strange thing is that it says my raid 1 uses online about 25 a 40% of it’s capicity. I don’t understand that part…

I get a speed of:
320 write
421 read

You could try to transcode your footage to DNxHR.

Those are below average read n write numbers. How is your RAID connected to your computer? Best would be thunderbolt. Or miniSAS.USB 3 is ok.
