I’ve been doing a lot of EX XDCAM lately.
What I would suggest is editing in EX but change the render codec to ProRes in the sequence settings.
This makes it a lot less time consuming render and export wise as well as maintaining image quality.
I wouldn’t waste time transcoding everything, but thats how i work.

do you have after effects cs4?
there is an adobe media encoder that comes with it on the installation disc.
thats how I got things going without having to buy another encoder.
you might also look into pegasys tmpgenc mpeg encoder I think it’s only $ 50 and should be able to do that. (if you have a pc you can use)

I do a lot of festival screeners as well.
Lately it’s been digibeta or blu-ray, but like the others have said, you have to supply what they ask for if you want to be seen.

I know, it’s very irritating that compressor locks out options like that.
I actually use Adobe Media Encoder (came with after effects) to accomplish that.
