I have used a b4 mount with the Clairmount system in the past. Check with your local rental house, or call them directly.

I agree with John. If you are having clogged head problems, send it to Panasonic and have them clean and align your deck. I had a reoccurring clogged head issue that was never resolved until I sent it to Panasonic in LA. They do a great job, and turn gear around quickly.

Cleaning heads on your own can create more problems. Use caution.

Sounds like a poorly set-up Varicam. The HVX makes a nice picture, but properly dialed-in Varicam will be superior in every way.

Ever since I got my DSC chart, my Varicams make really nice pictures.

So much for upgrading to lithium. Now my fear is the TSA will reject all “audio/visual” batteries in checked baggage. They don’t know the difference between a Dionic and Hytron.

Thanks for this info… now I need to inform my clients that my batteries may or may-not arrive with the rest of the camera package.

I hate flying even more now.

    Jon,

Thanks again for your insight. My primary role in this installation is the lighting of the green screen (I am a DP). I have a great deal of green screen experience, so it will be properly lit, and the subject will be well separated. Assuming the subject and the green screen are well lit, can a good key be pulled in Premiere from the work flow described above?

Thanks for your insight. To clarify, these are interviews and people speaking directly into camera while sitting. Very little movement beyond head nods and smiles.

Is is possible to achieve a decent key without additional hardware and using the 4:2:0 HDV color from the Canon camera in Premiere? We are attempting to create a simple solution without the need for third party software or hardware.

If it’s not too late, change your workflow and import the native 24p HD via firewire. You can edit on powerbook and save yourself many headaches. The files are not much bigger than DVCAM, and you will be editing in HD!

This tutorial is a bit dated, but explains the process:

From what I understand, the blue (PRO50 label) and red “L” cassettes (HD label) have been discontinued. I wish Panasonic would continue to provide the Red label, as it lessens confusion with producers who don’t understand that there is NO difference. I worked with a production company which purchased one yellow cassette as they thought it would last 126 minutes in the Varicam. There were rather miffed when I informed them on fact it would only last 31 minutes.

Perhaps Panasonic could relabel the “yellow” cassette with more information? I have to admit 126L is a bit misleading. Sounds like even the “techs” out there are confused.

Yes you can edit 720 24p on a powerbook… I use a 1.67GHz all the time and it works great. The data rate is only 40 mbs, not much more than DV. You will need to ingest firewire, and use a 7200 rpm firewire 800 drive as your media drive (I suggest Lacie).

You can connect a monitor via the 1200As HD-SDI output, but be aware there will be a hiccup in the video every few seconds. Don’t worry, this will not effect your project in any way.

    A couple of hints:

Make sure your powebook has lots of RAM.
Update to the latest version of FCP 5.1.4
Be sure that you have no other firewire devices attached when you do your import.
Be aware that renders will take longer. Budget your time.

Nothing at this time… I own another Varicam package. Just consolidating.
