The best way is to return the unit too Panasonic factory service. In addition to conventional head cleaning they replace cleaning rollers.
In the past I have had recurring clogged head problems with my 1200A decks, but lately not so bad.
Of course you can clean the heads and rollers yourself, using isopropal alcohol and q-tips or clean dry cloth, but the disassembly of the machine is tricky and the head gap so small that you might just make it worse.

January 17, 2008 at 4:31 amI agree with John. If you are having clogged head problems, send it to Panasonic and have them clean and align your deck. I had a reoccurring clogged head issue that was never resolved until I sent it to Panasonic in LA. They do a great job, and turn gear around quickly.
Cleaning heads on your own can create more problems. Use caution.

February 5, 2008 at 7:32 amIn the operating instructions for the AJ-HD1200A on page 53, it says:
“The unit comes with an auto head cleaning function which reduces the amount of dirt on the heads automatically. However, in order to improve the unit’s reliability, it is recommended that the video heads be cleaned on a daily basis. Use the cleaning fluids specified by Panasonic.”
This seems sensible and wise, as long as you are careful. I haven’t found anything yet on the Panasonic website that tells me which cleaning fluids are preferred. Is there a Panasonic rep out there that can comment on this recommendation further?
