Thanks Barry,
That does help settle the nerves a bit. I have to admit I’m making this decision based off the price difference. One class of camera I can afford and the other I can’t unfortunately at this point. But I don’t think that’s the end of the world. I love the functionality of the hvx200. I wish it was significantly faster and less noisy and some of my snooty clients(god love them) want the camera to be bigger…Thus the 500.
I wish I could acurately time code sinc the 200 and 500 but that’s ok.
I am torn though still over P2 in the first place. I love it for my work but when clients come in from out of town they still want that tape and I swear I should be on payroll at Panasonic for the number of clients I’ve sold the delivering a hard drive of media to.
There have been two times though that I needed to dump footage to DVCPro50 and DVCPro100 tapes. Bummer! The SD is fine because I have a ajsd93 in house but the DVCProHD100 tape has brutal since renting a 1200a cost between $400-500 a day and the dup houses charge the same amount to master to tape from hard drive.
Old problem, tired argument… I’ll keep pluggin away with P2 and I’m excited to do so, but we are ahead of everyone in the real world and I wish there was a cost effective way of being able to dump media to tapes when necessary.
Thanks!
Are there any sample images and comparison tests out there?
Thanks!

wait wait wait.
I’m a day away from ordering the 500…
I mean the argument of saving $20k is pretty amazing and hard to get beyond. But if you’re not doing News and you don’t mind the DVCPROHD format that the 2100 gives you…
Jan, come on, that was a very vague comment. ” the HVX500 makes pretty nice images” ??
I’m sure the extra 400k pixels gets you a nicer image but the 500 has to have its niche. can you elaborate on where see it excelling and finding its place?Where are some sample images and some side by sides with these two cameras and the HDX900 and the HVX200 would be really really helpful.
Do these samples exist?
Thanks

Thanks guys!
Its great to cut through the marketing hype and counter hype.
Ok so I’m even more convinced of the HPX500. But two last questions.
1st, why are both the hvx200 and the HPX500 able to shoot the 720p formats not over 60i, but they can’t shoot the 1080p formats in “native” frame rates? Why is there no 1080 24pn?
2nd, Why can the HPX3000 shoot this form of 1080 24pn? The brochure from Panny looks like it can shoot DVCPRO100 HD at 1080 24pn. Can it only do this with the new codec not DVCPRO100? ANd if it can do the 10080 24pn in dvcpro100 why can’t the 200 and 500?
Thanks!

I’m sold…I’ll take a HPX500 please with a side of fries!
Any way of jam syncing the HPX500 and the HDX200 for time code?
And what do we think about cross cutting the HPX500 and the HDX200?
Mostly I’m ready to move up from the 200 to the 500 for two reasons.Fisrt for as amazed as I am with the 200, I am disgusted with how slow the ccd’s are. Its just nowhere as capable in low light as either 2/3″ cameras or even 1/3″ DV cameras. I’m constantly fighting this.
Second, for as happy as clients are with the final product I give them from the HDX200, I constantly face the fire from them that its a small unprofessional looking camera. They usually zip it when they see the product but I’m frustrated defending it.
I have two reservations.
First, I’m worried how quickly the AVC codec will put dvcproHD in fat camp.
And Secondly, am I going to wish I didn’t buy this discounted HD glass that comes with the package?
On a side note…for as silly of a product is the fs-100… I love giving my FCP clients QT DVCPRO HD footage. I wish I could record that codec onto the P2 cards. A salesman I talked to wasn’t sure if the fs-100 was going to have the same playback through camera problems that the hpc2000 has. Anyone know about that?
THanks for your input Barry!

that’s actually not a bad idea though right?
I mean its a better than average set for someone to view an end product on anyways.
So you’d go DVI into both or does the MXO give it something else?

Thanks!
It was useful to hear people say that they wouldn’t feel comfortable with the laptop as the primary editing station. I also was under the assumption that the laptops with faster hardware specs than my Dual 2gig PowerPC G5 with 4gigs or Ram would preform faster than my tower, especially if they were Intel 2.16 chips… So that’s valuable info.
I suppose I’ll still wait till NAB and see if the new laptops (assuming and hoping there will be new laptops) will be affordable enough to move that way vs just getting a used G4 macbook pro with the PCMCIA card slot.
My only question though would be woul the G4 macbook pro with the PCMCIA card slots run the newest version of Apple OS Leopard & FCP6 that are rumored to come out soon? And would it run HD Rack fast enough to capture from DVCPRO HD cameras like the HVX200?
Thanks again!

so whats the transfer speed? are we improving upon the 1 gig a minute that the g4 powerbooks can do, or is it the same or slower when connected to the 2.6 dual core macbook pros?

oh great. so I looked over there site but didn’t find the answer to this question. Does the P2genie work with firestore fs100? and does it only work with P2 media or would it do its magic with QT files?
