a little re-reading I see that Rob was referring to the P2 Store becoming obsolete not P2… My mistake but I guess I still don’t know how the P2 Store would become obsolete either…

God the idea of P2 being obsolete with something that would come out at NAB is frightening. I can’t see how that would happen though… Can someone describe this nightmare scenerio? I know the new Mac PCExpress slots need an adapter for the P2 cards. Is that all that we should expect? Why would Apple not bring full support of all media and formats into its supported infrastructure? I know it doesn’t support Sony’s XDCAM at least for now. But how would NAB spell the end of P2?

I’m not sure I really understood Jan’s last comment. Do people feel more or less assured that FCP is going to support Panasonic’s MXF?

Is what people refer to as a “P2 viewer” a third party program for Macs that allows you to scroll through a directory of MXF clips, review their meta data, and watch them? My idea of native support within FCP is that importing the clips into FCP doesn’t unwrap the MXF file into a QT file, or at least it allows for full integration of P2 MXF metadata within FCP’s project files?

A little help connecting the dots… thanks

February 13, 2006 at 10:14 pm in reply to: wireless transmission of P2?

It seems like they already have the option of sending the low res proxy video via a wifi card that slips into the SPX800. So if its a question of bandwidth… why isn’t this solved or offered already? Wouldn’t it be great to transmit the original MXF file to a laptop or desktop wirelessly either live or after the fact? Would this be faster or slower than p2 tranfer methods?

  • Yes I sincerely hope Apple is building this into FCPHD6. How do we send them the message?

Barry I wonder if you know the anser to my questions though of how the re-importing the MXF files into FCP’s projects after the media has been taken offline at the end of the show?

Does this it work as tape does where as soon as you’ve re-imported the files and they’ve been unwrapped into QT files that they automatically sync up within your timelines?

    Thanks,

    Chris

Does this method keep all the MXF Meta data intact?

So I’m trying to figure in price then to this workflow. How much di this all cost you to get set up? Is there anything you’d change?

Also as to archiving on a 1 gig G Raid and putting the raid on the shelf…what’s the shelf life of this methid of archiving? I know this will sound stupid but do mean you are actually unplugging the drive and placing it on a shelf. Are you still not worried the drive will fail one day?

I suppose this is a good enough workflow though that gets you up and running using P2. And as future Archiving solutions arrise and fall in price you could always cross your fingers that the G Raid hasn’t failed yet and archive to DLT, Blue-Ray, or Holographic …

This was an example of a P2 workflow that included redundancy and archiving.

What do people think about this?

    ————————————————–

On the intial shoot, we had a PC laptop with a PCMCIA slot, and slipped the P2 card into that and connected several 80GB Porsche hard drives to offload the RAW P2 data…CONTENTS and LAST CLIP.txt. Then we took those, copied them to a large 1TB G-Raid to give to me to import and convert…putting the converted files onto two 500GB G-Raids. After importing the footage and making sure it all worked, we kept the 1TB G-Raid as our archiving master…reformatting the Porche Drives.

On the second shoot, we acquired a 60GB P2 Store and downloaded to that with the push of a button. Then when it was full, we used the laptop to transfer from the P2 store to the Porsche drives (a Mac will work for this, but requires a few steps NOT in the manual). Again, they were put on the 1TB G-Raid and imported.

The 1TB G-Raid will most likely be put on a shelf with the RAW files as the method of archiving.

Just out of curiosity… What’s your archiving workflow. We are having quite the discussion on archiving and start to finish workflow in the P2 forum. How are you overcoming the need to archive the media you’ve shot after your project? And are you backing up the data from your hard drives after you import from P2 card and erase the p2 card? If not… aren’t you woried about your original source data disappearing with a failed drive as you edit even before you go to archive at the end of the project?

    toke,

Existing FCP needs to convert the MXF file to QT for editing in FCP but it doesn’t erase the metadata right? the original mxf file is still on your computer?

And the thought that FCP6 would support native MXF editing with Metadata imported into FCP as clip properties…

When will we know about this? NAB? Again another hiccup in the full P2 workflow. Then again I’m learning about all of this one step at a time. It be great to have an actual training DVD on all the workflows possible across P2 solution, archive solution, and across editing platform. If Panasonic is trying to evolve the industry here I think the training should come from them and the information should all be standardized that comes out. Currently it feels like there are islands of expertise out there and forums like this or seminars to some degree are the only way of connecting the dots and bringing the whole industry up to speed at the same time.
