So I was under the immpression that P2 didn’t work with FCP … or at least it didn’t import the full meta data of the MXF file? Is this right?

Jeremey,
What Lens are you using? I’d like to get a good telephoto lens with doubler for talking heads and broll and I’m looking for a good wide angle as well.
I may or may not have a big budget for my lenses. If not then I was looking at the Fujinon 20×8.6 BERM. What are your recomendations?
Thanks

Jeremey,
Thanks for the Ultrium 3 (LTO) sugestion. Is this what you were talking about?
It seems that even in “native” transfer mode it still has a 2:1 compression.
“data transfer rates of 68-136 MB/ second (2:1 compression)” So is that native or not? Also, at 68MB/sec, it then transfers 1gig in ?So it requires an operating CPU and we’re using FCPHD on a Mac. How would we set that up if we wanted to use a Mac?
Lastly…And this is a question simply about P2’a MXF archiving capability. Do all these solutions archive the whole set of MXF Metadata?

In light of John’s last post I should probably amend my last post.
I think I must have some wires crossed and that there are some solutions out there.
I would love to hear the recomendations.

Wow…
I feel like the hammer was just dropped on me (and P2) today…
I went back and read the “Archiving” thread in the P2 forum from the end of Jan06 and together with this thread I have the feeling that there is simply no way to justify making the investment in P2 based equipment and workflow.
I can get around the loss of timecode issue and I can embrace the added time of transferring media to the final edit suite’s hard drive(as opposed to log & capturing)…but I have yet to see a rational archiving system and workflow.
It seems to be the nail in the coffin. I even understand the high cost of P2 acquisition media. But until archiving becomes as cheap as tape or cheaper, I don’t get what we’re even talking about all this for.
I mean Jan, Gary anybody! How do we archive? I’m even talking about working in DVCPRO50 SD still at this point.
I’ve heard burn desired clips to DVD-R – 4.7gig or 9gigs for dual layer. Let

Hey Jeremy,
I really appreciate the feedback and commend your personal risk of bodily injury for admitting to not being ready for P2 just yet.
I really want to go P2 though and I’m willing and I have the opportunity to put together the workflow together now. I’m concerned as hell about archiving and would love to hear what all the great solutions are.
But I have to admit as much as I’ve researched on the camera, the P2 format and DVCPRO50… I didn’t understand what you meant by the DVCPRO50 format not being up to the 8 or 10 bit compression… I’m not sure how I missed this important feature but I need to be educated here. I had heard that the SDX 900 better than DVCAM25 for keying and compositing. So the DVCPRO50 that comes in as P2 MXF is different(not as robust) as the Digitized from tape DVCPRO50?
Yikes… fill me in!

Two more things I’ll add to my last post…
As far as credability of the SPX800 check this out. Anyone see more hype than reality? And as far as workflow (and I can’t believe I haven’t realized this before) but one can always use a lunch break to begin offloading P2 content to hard drive so the second half of the day footage doesn’t have to keep you past the end of the shoot too much for its transfer.
There’s no way of shooting on one p2 card and offloading from another p2 card while both p2 cards are in the camera is there?
Thanks,
Chris

January 7, 2006 at 7:59 pm in reply to: As a one man band…what do you think about: Matthews ROAD-RAGS C-VIVAL KIToh yes you are right. The road rags are not for shaping the kinos on the background. They would be for cutting the kino’s off the background and taking down a white shirt or the likes. As for the background light I’m not sold on the source four but only because of their size. Its obviously a great light and I use it often on bigger shoots but when I’m a one man band I need a small light to creat a slash or a sconze look in the background. I’m thinking a 300w fresnel of some sort…
I’d love to get two little “lite panels” for small touches and maybe even scratches and/or backlights. But they are expensive.
I guess I’m lookinf for any general feedback but I’d also like to know if people like the road rags? does the portability of the case make up for the time of assembly? How long does it take to put the flag together?
Thanks

wow great questions… I only assumed that they would but if there is uncertainty on the matters, I’d really like Jan to let us know.
I’d really like to know the fastest it and the Firestore can transfer to a firewire deck. I am right though that onced transfered to a firewire drive that the drive would act exactly the same as a P2 card once connected to a NLE? And it could be edited right away?
I also agree that the design of the CinePorter is much better than the firestore.
It would be great if the cineporter had a small rechargable battery slot though as well for one reason. If since the cineporter draws from the same battery as the camera, and if the camera could pull power from the cineporter … somehow … you could change batteries on the camera without a stop in recording. I know many cameras can switch from ac to battery and back while operating without any problems. with up to 240 gigs to fill unless you have AC around you’re gonna run out of juice before you run out of media storage.
As for the price point…it’s a done issue? They’re not going to change at this point right? So we kind of have to invent all these workflow work arounds to make this wonderfully expediant IT workflow as accessible to the variety of clients out there as there are. Seems like Panasonic could offer a rebate with a purchase of a firestore or better yet cineporter when you buy the camera…
Hey it’s the season for wishing!

Sorry I am not up to spec yet to understand the jab about “true HD” is there a link or a thread that describes this?
I’d really like to be prepared for what my competition with a different product is going to say and how to counter it…
Any help?
Thanks,
Chris
