That would be too easy. The only way to get the data off the drive in this unit is to play it back through the HDMI or Component outputs.

You don’t need to scold me, Steve. I asked a perfectly legitimate question about a very grey and misunderstood subject. If I knew it was illegal, I wouldn’t have asked the question.

That’s right…. and they lost (the famous Sony case). That’s why we have VCR’s and DVD recorders today, for Legal archiving of TV programs for personal use.

Hmmm, that’s interesting, because the cable company gives you directions on how to transfer SD programs using the s-video or composite outputs. Why would they encourage illegal behavior? I would think it would be the same as recording the program in the first place, only I am just saving it to a more permanent format.

I bought a bundle from Video Guys that included a Pioneer BDR-203, USB Enclosure, 5 BDR discs and a BDRW, all for $300. It might be less now. I bought Toast 10 separately. Works great!

No, I only changed the stuff I mentioned.

I set the bit-rate to 800 kbs, since that’s the bit-rate it will be streamed at. I also changed the audio to mono, and the aspect ratio. Some set-top DVD recorders use an oddball type of anamorphic scheme, which results in a 704×480 video, so I had to uncheck the anamorphic box which corrects it to 640 x 480.

I downloaded Handbrake (V. .9.1. because I’m still on OS 10.4) and I encoded a 40 min. VOB file in 18 minutes compared to 25 minutes using Mpeg Streamclip, and it looked slightly better as well. I’m still looking for faster solutions, since I have 60 hours of material to encode.

H.264 for HD DVD is not the same as H.264 for Blu-Ray. If you put that file into Toast to burn your Blu-Ray, it will try to re-compress it before burning. I use Mp2 to compress for Blu-Ray. I just did one last night, and it took 4.5 hours for a 1.5 hr. program. That’s on a dual-core MacPro with 2 gigs of ram.
