  • Which external Blu-ray drive to buy for mac?

The Blu-ray thing is confusing to me. I want to burn directly from FCP Studio 3 into an external Blu-ray burner. Which do you suggest? B&H has a Lacie for $360, and that includes Toast 9, which makes me wonder if this model is a bit older, since Toast 10 has been out a number of months now.

I bought a bundle from Video Guys that included a Pioneer BDR-203, USB Enclosure, 5 BDR discs and a BDRW, all for $300. It might be less now. I bought Toast 10 separately. Works great!

Other World Computing, macsales.com. Their external unit has a Quad interface (FW400, FW800, USB, and eSATA).

I just picked up a MCE 8x for $300, it’s marketed specifically toward Macs. I have yet to install, so I can’t comment on that yet. It came with a single BD-RE disc and I purchased spindles of Maxell and Verbatim 4X BD-Rs separately.

We’ve use the LG GGW-H20L for over a year now with no problems. They’re going for $180 on new egg.
We’ve installed them into two Mac Pro towers using the hidden sata port on the motherboard. The eject button works with this drive as well.

Where is this hidden SATA port you speak of? Is it on the 2008 octacores?

To my understanding this port is on all mac pros dating back to their first release.
