I think you’d be hard pressed these days to find someone in this business who only works on job and doesn’t have a 2nd or some extra projects on the side.
Several years ago, I was working a night shift from 7pm to 2am and got a second gig during the day from 9:30a to 6:30. After adding in commuting time, which was a lot, I got about 4 hours of sleep a nignt. This went on for 3 months. Let me tell you, I was toast. I don’t know how I functioned, but I don’t think I was giving my best because of it. In addition, going home one night, I fell asleep at the wheel. I am lucky to be alive.

Marcus, there are 2 things you can do. One is to get an asst. editing job on a film or a fictional narrative TV series or show. Also find a low budget indie film that needs an editor and will provide someone like you with an opportunity to edit (for low or no money) so you will have something for your reel. Good places to look are Mandy.com and Craigslist. Don’t worry about the unions, there is plenty of non-union work and if you need to join the union, you have the experience to join as an assistant editor (costs less than an editor). Also, would you be interested in reading a short book that I just wrote called “EDITING REALITY”, and giving me your feedback on it? It hasn’t been published yet and I am testing it with my target readers. It’s about the aesthetics of editing geared toward documentary/reality shows. It’s not long and I hope you’ll learn something. Email me at nushu@optonline.net and I’ll email it over to you for you to review and some questions to answer about it. I’d really appreciate it. Anyone else who is an asst. editor, student or new at editing is also welcome to contact me to review the book.

I don’t know if I’m “exactly right” but that’s for the backup on the Jon. But one thing I feel pretty certain about is that drop frame drops a frame every 10 minutes (Where’s Charlie King when we need him).
Also, if you change a tape from DF to NDF or the other way around, the tape is then identified as, let’s say, Tape 1DF, or Tape 2NDF. Can I get an Amen on that Jon?

No, turning off the time code button is not the correct thing to do, you need to capture the time. Without time you may as well not even digitize the footage if you plan to re-digitize it later at a higher resolution. The problem is that you are probably trying to batch digitize clips that were logged somewhere else on a logging station and they entered all the numbers in the TC that doesn’t match the TC that’s on the tape. That’s why it’s “expecting” non-drop tape. And it’s invariably always that TC is incorrectly entered as non-drop instead of drop, not the other way around. Anyway, you need to highlight all the clips with the wrong TC and go under the Bin menu (I think it’s bin, I’m not infront of my Avid) and go to Modify Clip. Then select drop-frame from the pull down menu in the Modify Clip window. That should do it. If it’s a drop frame tape, it needs to see drop frame numbers. In case you don’t know drop frame TC has a semi-colon between the numbers and non-drop has a colon. If you were manually capturing the clips you wouldn’t have this problem because the Avid wouldn’t have any pre-conceived idea of what the TC is or should be.

I’m totally Vegas illiterate so I don’t know what it can do, but I can tell you that you can do multi-layering with both Avid Xpress and Adrenaline (if that’s what you mean by compositing) but only the top of the line Nitris is geared toward “compositing”.

[Bimdas] “when I try and play the footage, the time bar moves but the video doesn’t play and neither does the audio.
I can scrub through the footage and it plays in the record monitor in real-time but when I try and play it, it doesn’t seem to work.”If I’m understanding you correctly, you can scrub through the video in the source monitor but it won’t play. Plays OK in the records monitor and I’ll bet it would play in a pop up monitor if you tried. This leads me to believe that the problem is simply that you have a bin open that is touching or intruding in the source monitor window, which will prevent playback. Try checking that first and just move that bin off the source monitor, should play then. If not, it may be a driver issue, but it seems to me that if it were a driver issue, it wouldn’t play in any monitor.

Ditto on that Jon, and when I was answering the question, I had the nagging feeling that when I said you couldn’t change a title from the bin, there was indeed a way that I just didn’t know about and I didn’t have time to check it out. By now, we all should know that with Avid, there’s always many ways to do things. It’s deep, man! I just discovered something the other day by accident.

You can’t alter the title from the bin. First you must put it in the timeline. Then with the blue line over the title clip in the timeline, go into effects mode. In the upper left hand corner there is an icon. Click on it and it will open the title in title tool. Change your border color and whatever else you want and then save it. Another tile will be created. Put that title in your bin with your other titles and rename it because it will have the same name as the original title.

As far as I know, there is nothing within Avid to reformat 4:3 to 16:9. You’ll have to venture to some other software to accomplish this. As for the overexposed video, if it’s not too overexposed to the point where it’s just blown out completely and unuseable, you should be able to create a moonlit look with color correction and possible color effect as well. You could also create a color in title tool and super it over the video to add additional color.
