I’m currently using Sony Vegas as my main edit package. I want to learn how to use Avid.

Which Avid product do I need to be able to do what Vegas does already which is editing and compositing. (I also tinker with After Effects)

How do I do this combination with Avid? I’m thinking of using Xpress Pro. Now is that purely an edit package? I checked their web site but am still confused. I’m Avid illiterate.

Can someone tell me what I need to be able to Edit and Composite with Avid Xpress the same as I do already with Sony Vegas.

I’m totally Vegas illiterate so I don’t know what it can do, but I can tell you that you can do multi-layering with both Avid Xpress and Adrenaline (if that’s what you mean by compositing) but only the top of the line Nitris is geared toward “compositing”.

The thing to remember about Avid is it’s an edit program. It edits very well. It has (possibly) the best media management going. It does layer video, but it has no transfer modes like AE. It’s audio manipulation is also a little weak compared to Vegas. Are you looking to make money with your editing skills now, or are you looking to break in slowly? Don’t choose a hammer because it looks cool – choose you tool because it works for you….
