[Jeff Markgraf] “I wonder why X to Pro can’t do video in the AAF compositions along with the audio? What a lifesaver that would be.”

No idea, as they have solutions (for FCP 7 I think) that do just that. I’ve bugged them about it, please head to Marquis and do the same. 🙂

[Andy Field] “”Working with mono stereo tracks is no fun In Pr Pro”

Easily solved…in audio preferences you can chose to import mono stereo clips as split track mono….done”

Nope. Unless there’s another setting, it has no effect on files imported via XML. Everything comes in split, and can’t be combined in the timeline. You can link L/R, but they still act as independent mono files. Going from 7 to X used to result in the same thing, but IA fixed it. I’m sure it’s because the sequence calls for discrete L/R tracks, but it’s a huge PITA…

    SETTINGS:

    File Via XML:

    File Imported on it’s own:

[Jeff Markgraf] “Any thoughts from the workflow gurus would be appreciated.”

Like Zachary said, EDL-X (not free). Or, you can import fcpxml into Resolve 11 lite (free) and export an AAF. I’ve tested both methods with video, not sure about Audio… EDL-X may work for that as well. X2Pro (not free) makes amazing audio AAF’s, but last I tried MC for some reason wouldn’t open them. More specifically, they opened and looked right, but MC wouldn’t link to the embedded audio. I haven’t tried with the latest MC (8.3) I’ll give it a try and update when I can..

[Chris Frantz] “I won’t bother with listing the Premiere pro’s I think that thread underneath us is doing that better than I could.”

Well, you should use Premier then. I’ll defer to your years of experience.

[Chris Frantz] “I’m not sure why you would have a single bin with 100’s of SFX not organized any more than that, that seems like a FCPX problem where there’s only a few layers of organization. Events, folders, keyword collections. ;)”

I don’t. I have a library that has thousands of SFX all nicely organized with KW collections. I have the same “project”, with the exact same structure using bins which I use in Pr and FCP 7. It’s so much easier for me to find things in X even with the detailed organization. Not even close.

January 27, 2015 at 1:17 am in reply to: FCPX offers what advantages over Premiere?

[Chris Frantz] “Premiere has a pretty fantastic media browser as well, I might even say a better one as you can have multiple open and explore all kinds of different media types.”

It’s awful, and to be fair, it’s not just Premiere. Anything that requires you to have multiple panes open, bins upon bins upon bins really just pales in comparison. Open a bin with hundreds of sound effects, and find a few options that have real sharp attacks, a quick peak, and then tail out. In filmstrip view in X I can find them all in about 30 seconds just by looking at the waveforms. Anything else… preview everything.

Find the shot of a clock face that is “somewhere” in one of 6 reels in one of 3 versions of feature. Again, 30 seconds in X. In anything else you’ll be scrubbing through everything and hoping you don’t miss it. You may need to play it all in FF.

    Totally different league

Is this a new trend in topics? lol Here’s one…

It’s more fun to cut in and I spend less time swearing at it and more time trying crazy editorial stuff than any other NLE I use.

    Too subjective? 🙂 OK, well…

    Filmstrip view in Event Browser
Browser in general, way easier to find stuff
Live, real time preview of all audio and video filters/FX
Much better audio plugins *in the app*
    Really great 3rd party ecosystem
    no tracks
    the inspector, warts and all
    clip skimming
    snapshots
    keywords, collections, smart collections
    share destinations/bundles
really great compositing/title stuff built in
retiming/color matching/audio fixes are really nice, and can easily be amped up via 3rd parties
magnetic timeline. really really fast trimming of cuts to time etc
    compound clips (not nests!)
    cleaner UI
quicker access to setting for audio configs, video settings
    live waveforms
embedded audio, access to components in *any* clip including masters
No Tracks… oh, did i say that?
Generators, built in and from Motion
No mode switching for subframe editing

    gotta work… I’ll add more… 🙂

January 26, 2015 at 6:50 am in reply to: Fun With Multichannel Secondary Storylines…

[Patrice Freymond] “isn’t it called the shelf ?”

No, that’s the bit you can grab at the top of a secondary storyline. I’m really not sure what that part of an expanded audio only clip is called, a regular clip it would just be the video. I like spine too though… 🙂 Glad you liked it, I hope it’s useful.

[Dennis Radeke] “In the confusing worlds of trackers, there are point, planar, 2d, 3d trackers and probably a couple more I’ve never heard of… 😉

    Hope this makes sense.”

Thanks Dennis, it makes sense. And to be fair, by “not very good” I was really comparing it to how AE (and Slice-X) works. It is a nice built in feature, guess I’m just spoiled by Mocha-powered results. 🙂

[Oliver Peters] “Hmm… I presume that means you are using older versions of Photoshop and After Effects. Both are essential in the work I do.”

When I use them, yes. CS6. Full disclosure though, we have a dedicated Graphics dept/guy who of, course, does have the latest greatest. In X/Motion, I can pretty much whip up whatever I need which may or may not get redone in AE etc. . In Pr and (still) FCP 7, I just temp stuff and replace it with what he does. Lazy? You bet! 😉
