[Lance Bachelder] “The perception here in L.A. is still extremely negative toward FCPX and it will take a serious upgrade and some “celebrity” endorsements to get back to the standing FCP7 had…”

True, but in my experience that perception is largely coming from folks who haven’t really used it “in anger” as Aindreas would say. Doesn’t change things, but I’ve gotten a couple inquiries about X (based on random forum posts on the tubes…) from some folks who are quite interested. And there will be major, and minor, upgrades… 🙂

[Michael Hadley] “We switched to FCPX 18 months ago. I’ve been very happy with it, but the constant flow of negative commentary in the press and on forums like this about X and Apple has been harsh. “

Yep. 🙂 And ironically, much of that commentary comes from people who would probably really benefit from a lot of the stuff, current and coming soon, in FCP X. There are some whose workflows/styles are not a good fit for X. And there are alternatives. But there are quite a few people who won’t give it a shot because “Apple has abandoned pros”. Turns out that’s not exactly true…

[Jeremy Garchow] “If I can’t have a track that I can put the boom channel in, let me at least use the awesome fcpx devices to select all boom channels, or assign a boom Role to components from the Browser so I can use the index to select the Role.

    Know what I’m sayin’?”

Gotcha. You sent feedback right? 😉

[Bill Davis] “But I’ve never seen a database where you can search or sort on an actual COLOR. WORDS for a colors sure. But not a color as a concept.

So it’s great for labels. But kinda a fail for tags, IMO.”

But that’s the point Bill, it is for labels. Not tags, not a database. a visual thing so you can be plying and say to yourself “here comes that effect section, and that explosion is too loud so let me grab it and change the level before the playhead gets there”. That kind of thing. Again, relatively easy if you have a half dozen audio clips piled up, not so easy if you have 20 or so.

It’s like your music analogy. Yes, chords are represented as a vertical stack of notes. But, without the horizontal lines that make up the staff, what the hell notes are you going to play? There needs to be a visual reference. Not rigid tracks, but some way to organize things other than “wherever it fits”.

Don’t get me wrong, I really really like “wherever it if its”, but when an audio bed gets deep, magnetism needs a little help. And to me, this isn’t really true on the picture side, though it’s be nice maybe. But connected video clips pile up nicely and generally behave as you’d expect.

    YM, clearly, MV 🙂

June 12, 2013 at 5:35 am in reply to: MacPro price speculation …

[Jamie Franklin] “I don’t believe Apple has redefined it, I think we have. I do think Randy’s vision though distorted Apple’s culture of what defines a “pro” user. “If my grandma can do it, the pros will love it!!” mentality”

I agree that we’ve redefined it, although I guess I disagree about Apples vision of what a pro is. I think, and this goes for FCP classic back in the day too, that they try to make tools that are really powerful but get out of the way. The complexity is there if you want it, but you have to look for it, rather than wade through it. And I’ll agree that they’ve thrown some babies out with the bathwater along the way, and I can see how that’s left a bad taste for a lot of people.

[Jamie Franklin] “Both are huge disappointments for me. Although I still give FCX the edge. The Mac Pro would make a great tool. I don’t believe FCX is, but neither work for me in a shared environment that can be incorporated in my existing eco-system.”

I can understand that. When I first opened X I was horrified. I got trials of Pr (which I hadn’t used much) and MC(which I had used a lot before FCP appeared) and ot back up to speed. I’m actually glad I did that. I own ’em both now. Well… I’m renting one. lol

But then I heard they had fixed some stuff in X, and tried it again. Really dug in. And damned if I didn’t end up liking it. A lot. It’s… immature in a lot of ways, but I see what Apple is trying to do, and I think ultimately it’s the right thing. Stuff needs improvement, and it’s not going to suit everyones workflow, but it’s no slouch.

As to the Mac Pro… I’m guessing Pr and MC are gonna be pretty awesome on it, as well as X. Of course, YMMV. 🙂

[Jeremy Garchow] “You cannot assign Roles to individual audio components in the browser, they must be assigned from a clip in a timeline of some sort. It’d be nice if that could change. “

Actually, if I’m understanding you, you definitely can assign roles to audio components in the browser, I do it all the time and it’s a huge timesaver. Right click clip, open in timeline, assign Roles. Done. Great for multichannel split source clips. 🙂

[Jamie Franklin] “Please. The difference, I may be aggressive towards the app or hardware. You guys start the aggression and snide on a personal basis.

    Lets move on shall we.

The hardware will be amazing for the app. It just seems like overkill to me, add the potential expense and Apple tax. (price and required expansion)

The imacs, even the i7 mini, are nice. I don’t see the need for the redefined “pro”. Toys are fun, but when your bank account bleeds for overkill, you start seeing diminishing returns.

    The Cudas will be missed.”

Fair enough. Not sure about what you mean by Apple redefining “pro” as it’s always been a vague term anyway. 🙂

[Bret Williams] “Lately I’ve also started grouping other elements this way. Put all my sfx in a secondary. Instant organization like a track. Just have to remember to use the P tool to move stuff around within.”

I’ve been doing that as well, and works pretty well… Now if the (mx, fx, dia) Roles would just stop trying to run home to the primary if I didn’t want them to… 🙂 Maybe rather than Role Grouping, you could have the timeline separated into visual, expandable vertical “workspaces” FCP wouldn’t have to figure out how to group things, you could just put clips in your user defined spaces and they stay there unless specifically pulled out. Maybe time for another email… 🙂
