I downloaded it a while ago… played with it but never really used it. It’s pretty cool, kind of a NLE/Mograph/3D/Compositing hybrid thingy. Comes with a boatload of free (and quite good) effects plugins that work in any NLE.

In the end, the effects conflicted with something in one of the multitude of NLE’s/GFX apps I have, so I uninstalled them. I’ve actually been thinking about downloading it again to see if the effects play nicer with my stuff… though it seems they spun off the effects into a subscription deal. Clever. ????

It’s cross platform too, so it’s a way bigger pond than FCP X, or the “Pro” NLE market in general.

Editing using a touch screen is awful. I’m sure the Surface is a wonderful thing but.. no thanks.

[Michael Gissing] “The iMac concept seems so wasteful to me.”

True, but I’m still happily grinding away on 6 year old iMac. Pr, MC, R14, Fusion, FCP X etc etc. Paid for itself in the first 3 weeks I owned it.

[Steve Connor] “Really think Apple Marketing should be jumping on to this one!”

I’d be very surprised if they don’t. ☺ The best part of this story is that it’s not some Apple corporate generated promo. There was a bit on ABC news about the video and Puerto Rico. Someone watching it noticed FCP X on a computer in the edit bay and posted it on Facebook. Ronny saw the FB post and contacted the director.

He also uses a post house here in LA which is very “FCP X friendly”, if anyone needs one.. 😉

[greg janza] “Charlie, obviously I’m way behind the technological times.

Any editing app made for an iphone is created by a team of sadists.

lol… well, technically it’s for the iPad, but I put it on my phone just to see if it worked. It did, and really well. but yes, it was a gigantic PITA. I don’t care what anyone says, doing “real” editing with a touch based UI is awful.

[Steve Connor] “What is FCPX never happened and Apple had released something similar to the current Premiere Pro – would we have all been happy?”
    [Oliver Peters] Yes.”

Well yeah, ‘cuz we wouldn’t known there was a better way to do things… 😉

[Morten Ranmar] “And stole some of its GUI from FCPX.”

Didn’t really steal anything, from what I’ve heard they had some help from Apple, at least initially. All hearsay of course, but it makes sense. The fact that Resolve had native fcpxml import early on, and is now the only NLE that does is probably not a coincidence.

    [Morten Ranmar] “and Soundtrack Pro.”

I really don’t get all the pining for STP, it had some great features, but I never used it to mix. The audio retiming/pitch preservation algorithm was amazing, and I have a feeling it’s still alive in FCP X, which is also amazing. Anyway, Logic is way better for mixing/sound design etc, and it now, finally, imports/exports fcpxml very nicely.

[andy patterson] “but I don’t see how discusing technology from the past is relevant. Do you?”

not really, just providing context. I’ve performed the same task on lots of systems dating back to prehistory. ☺

[andy patterson] “I am not saying the roles feature does not have merit or that it is not your best option. What I am asking is it everyone’s best option?”

Of course not, I’m not an NLE solipsist. All I’m saying is that for this particular task, exporting multiple versions of multiple sequences with different A & V output configurations FCP X is amazing. Yes, you can of course do this in any NLE, but it’s much easier from X. I prefer easy.
