2 million plus users
Posted by Michael Gissing on February 16, 2018 at 10:55 amI was surprised to get an email from HitFilm announcing that their user base had hit 2.1 million. Given that Apple announced FCPX had hit 2 million users just 10 month ago, I was surprised at how much quicker HitFilm had reached a similar target and more remarkably I have never had a job from an editor cutting with HitFilm. I have one coming up but I don’t even know if it exports anything standard like xml or AAF.
How did they get these numbers and where the heck are the users hiding?
Here’s the Apple announcement – https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=6&v=GpWNg7StoOQ

February 16, 2018 at 11:46 amI always take the term “users” with a pinch of salt, HitFilm has a free version so it’s likely a lot of people (like me) downloaded it to find out more but don’t actually use it. Same goes for FCPX, I know a few people that have it but don’t edit with it.

Me too but it cuts both ways. I can see FCPX out in the wild being used but where is HitFilm? I also see plenty of Pr & Resolve. I’m just wondering how HitFilm rose so fast but remains hidden from my world view. Does anyone know where it is being used?

February 16, 2018 at 7:31 pmI wonder how many of those 2 million seats are from one buyer who downloads to more than one computer?

February 16, 2018 at 11:37 pmI wonder how all software companies get their numbers. My specific curiosity however is who’s using HitFilm. Are editors finding it at facilities. What’s the demographic.
Do your friends use it? I’m wondering because if the numbers are as accurate as Apple or Adobe, it must be popping up on the radar for someone.

February 17, 2018 at 1:06 amI have yet to meet anyone that uses the software. Feature films have been primarily edited in Final Cut Pro, Premiere or Avid from my understanding. I wonder what the numbers are for Lightworks which has not been mentioned recently. Another Curiosity would be Resolve Studio especially since the drop in price last year. The software looks fascinating but have yet to try it.

February 17, 2018 at 11:17 pmNot commenting beyond the well discussed notes that the IRS’s SIC (occupation) stats had a mere 60,000 or so US folks reporting in the Professional Motion Picture or Television Editors or Camera Operators classification. (or whatever it’s technically called.)
So our “industry” is actually pretty darn small in the relative scope of things.
So ALL these sales numbers have to include huge chunks of two (all too easy to ignore!) classes. Those NOT self describing as full time dedicated editors – and a lot of folks outside the US (since those IRS figures obviously wouldn’t cover anyone else.)
FWIW.

February 23, 2018 at 6:32 amI downloaded it a while ago… played with it but never really used it. It’s pretty cool, kind of a NLE/Mograph/3D/Compositing hybrid thingy. Comes with a boatload of free (and quite good) effects plugins that work in any NLE.
In the end, the effects conflicted with something in one of the multitude of NLE’s/GFX apps I have, so I uninstalled them. I’ve actually been thinking about downloading it again to see if the effects play nicer with my stuff… though it seems they spun off the effects into a subscription deal. Clever. ????
It’s cross platform too, so it’s a way bigger pond than FCP X, or the “Pro” NLE market in general.
