Closest approximation is to make Favorite or Keyword ranges, (virtual subclips) and put a marker on the range with the text you want to carry over to the timeline. After you cut them in, you can view and quickly jump to -and search for- the markers using the tags view in the Timeline Index.
If you make Favorite ranges, you can quickly rename them by hitting TAB-ENTER right after you create the Favorites well.
Both marker text and Favorite range names are searchable in the Browser.

Martin posted screenshots showing me what happens. It doesn’t point to the specific point in the source clip.”Not sure why… plenty of apps work with xml to highlight ranges, add markers etc. All to specific clip times.

[Noah Kadner] “That would be a big mistakey…
“Agreed. Although, if X backups are slowing you down and you choose to disable them (not an issue for me, but I’ve heard a few reports) you need to consider a 3rd party solution such as Backups for FCP (App Store) or Pro Versioner from Digital Rebellion.
As others note, DO NOT RUN WITHOUT BACKUPS. Sorry to shout, but doing that is lunacy. In addition to the FCP Backups, I run both the apps above. Another type of lunacy. 🙂

[Steve Connor] “Apple quite happily tell us what’s months away in OSX and iOS releases, why on earth can’t they tell us about FCPX?”

[David Mathis] “Um yeah. What are your plans if Apple decides to axe Final Cut Pro as we know it?”
FFS, they’re not “axing” FCP X. Calm down. 🙂

I’ve had a flat one for… ages, since a couple months after they came out. Love it. It’s the “second” monitor for my iMac. I had to put it on a tale case of all things to get it to line up with the iMac screen, but it great, no matter what NLE/DAW/Random apps are on it. 🙂

[Michael Hancock] “If Apple wanted to definitively put the message out there that X was not being ignore, this isn’t how you do it.”
They have said this repeatedly at numerous events, and it’s been repeated endlessly by people, including me, who have heard them say it. They’ve also said they can’t talk about it publicly, and I’m not entirely sure that it’s because they want to be all secretive.
Apple used to advertise and talk publicly about all their software, pro apps and consumer apps. That changed, for all their software, within the last few years. At about the same time, Avid, Adobe, Microsoft and most others went to some flavor of a subscription model. Maybe the same thing precipitated all these changes? Or do you think that all software vendors just decided to shake things up at exactly the same time?
Note that the only company that also makes the computer on which the software exclusively runs, now does not promote their software. They sell it, but they don’t advertise it, or preview it, or anything. Is it because they’re mean? Bad Apple! Is it a conspiracy to keep everyone in the dark? Apple is abandoning pros! Or is there some legal/financial/accounting mumbo jumbo that prevents them from doing so?
I don’t know the answer, but I don’t believe all this is because of Apple’s secretive culture. Some? Sure. But I think there’s more to this than we’re aware of.
