Sorry I guess I should have stated more information, I am already networked. I can’t find how to actually start X-Factor. Especially since Help in X-Factor has one listing “About” the version number doesn’t really tell me how to use it. hahaha

I’ll play around some more and see first if I can figure it out, and second if it really helps any.

    Thanx

[tony salgado] “Believe me small claims court judgements do work if you apply liens on the defendants.”

Not in all cases. I applied a lein on a contractor who contracted me to TD an NAB show, then didn’t pay me for the 9 long days work. I won judgement in small claims court and put a lein on his house, he claimed a homestead on his house and then filed bankruptcy. He was allowed to keep up to $200,000 above what was owed on the house before any judgement leins were deducted. I got nothing and he walked away with $160,000 in his pocket. The judge told me he was sorry but the law was on the other guys side. Thank god next month those laws are changed due to Enron, and others.

For future reference, I create a bin which I simply call “Sequences” I put every version I am cutting into that and name them specific names that will help me remember which of the 20 or so versions I have made, well maybe not that many that often, but a few. It makes it much easier to find later. I know this doesn’t help for now, but think about it in the future. It will save you many headaches.

I presume you activated the tracks to be rendered and set in and out points and rendered in-out?

I have a problem with the fact you rendered again. Usually if you render, and attempt to render again you will get a message no effects to render. Something doesn’t sound right, but I have no idea at this point what.

September 20, 2005 at 10:24 pm in reply to: Charging sales tax for corp. video production

Sales taxes are very confusing and also different for all states. We had the state go after several production companies here in Nevada, several years ago. They stated that a finished tape made the services taxable. One productioin company took a van loaded with tapes to court and stated I keep teh tapes, therefore I didn’t sell them a finished product which by the tax law means I only performed a service which is not taxable in Nevada. This started the procedure in Nevada of charging taxes on actual supplies which are tapes, boxes, reels, etc. the tapes are taxed on tape charge only which ranges around 10% or more above our costs. The service of recording on the tape in Nevada is not taxable since that is a service.

Not sure about California tax laws. Other than when doing work such as film transfers and animatioin work in California, I would have them ship the finished product to Nevada. That made it a sale out of state and not taxable. If I were to walk out of the facility with the tape it was taxable.

September 20, 2005 at 3:49 pm in reply to: Political Ads: Use of Opposition likeness – Legalities

I should have added, the only real requirement is that your candidate’s likeness must be in the spot somewhere, many political campaign advertisers will place it very tiny next to the disclaimer, being tiny keeps it from being usable against you. There is a minimum size but it has been a few years since I did campaigns and forget the exact requirement, I know the disclaimer must be no smaller than 14 scan lines.

Having worked many political campaigns, from local mayoral to presidential, I can say anything the opposition says in public is usable for campaign ads. His broadcast spots can be taped off air and used. Any photographs can be used with permission of the photographer.
Any public statements are fair game. They place themselves in the public eye, and as a result, the public right to know laws are in effect.

Just about the only thing that is standard to every network, and this is preferred for many reasons is that program start at 1;00;00;00 time code.

[FWedit] “I get the impression they’d like me to observe, not actaully train by doing.”

You are probably right. I remember once as a freelancer covering vacation relief for an edit facility. I went over the day before (totally on my own time and without the request to do so) because I would not walk into a facility cold. Where are teh patch panels, what kind of router is used? Where is tape stored, how is the billing handled, how do we print labels?

I consider myself a seasoned professional (at that time I had 30+ years in the business)
I just considered it as protecting my reputation. Would not want to walk into a new place and not know where anything was or any procedures, my reputation would go down the tubes real fast.

I also have problems with the reference of prosumer products being out of the financial reach of professionals. We have to determine what constitutes a professional, or do we?

We, who have been in the industry for say, 30-40 or more years, remember when cameras were in the $125,000 and up price range. We were very happy when portables came out in the $75,000 range and along came hand helds dropping price to $45,000 and slowly coming down.

I don’t believe that the readership of COW is purely prosumer product users, but all ranges of professionals. Isn’t Broadcast Design more geared to broadcasting?

I feel we just have to realize that we, as professionals, work in all phases of the business, and as a result use all price ranges of equipment. I hope no one takes this the wrong way, I am just trying to ease the tension some may feel about the thread as it has become.

As to the glass on the front of cameras, that is pure physics, and it will be a loooooooooong time before someone can come up with a way to make glass more magnifying and smaller at the same time.
