June 16, 2005 at 7:34 pm in reply to: Compression Master plays fine on PC, doesn’t on MacFirst, make sure you update to Compression Master 3.1. It offers many enhancements and fixes over 3.0. Second, macs do have an issue with the TCP streaming protocol and Windows Media. Third, CM 3.1 added support for Windows Media Intellistream and MBR encoding, and you should check out those controls as well. Fourth, if you are still having issues, I would highly suggest contact Popwire’s support directly (support@popwire.com). They are very quick to respond usually, so that is a good route. Fifth, I don’t have a mac to test with at this moment, but when I get back on one tonight, I will try and test this out and see if there is anything further I can do for you.

I doubt Winrar will seriously decrease filesize. It is a file-based compressor, working well on documents and packages. It does not have any video compressing standards though, and thus would only likely save you 1% at most. If you are in need of a compression method that offers good to great quality while retaining the ability to edit and not introduce many artifacts, then you should think about using video codec such as Motion-JPEG.

Have you tried the “latest” beta? IT was released over a year ago, but since development halted on Cleaner, its probably all we’ll get.

Your description is very cryptic to me, so if that doesn’t work, I would seriously look into a new compression app like Sorenson Squeeze 4.1 or Compression Master 3.1 from Popwire.

June 14, 2005 at 5:39 am in reply to: Compression Master 3.1 support for Sorenson3 Pro?I haven’t seen anything like this, but here are a few tips: Make sure you are saving the setting when you edit it after double-clicking it. You should get a dialog asking if you want to save after editing and closing it (by clicking on the “x” next to the setting’s name). I imagine you are editing the setting, then either closing it without saving the changes, or leaving the settings dialog open and encoding without saving the settings. Therefore, the changes you have made to a setting are not being saved and are reverting to the default.
Another option, if you don’t want to save over or create a new setting, is to drag the setting to your movie, then double-click it from there to open it up. Any changes made from here do not require saving and the setting returns to its original saved state once the job is completed.
If none of this works, then maybe there is an issue with your preferences, and in that case, you should run disk utility and repair permissions.

June 13, 2005 at 4:23 pm in reply to: Compression Master 3.1 support for Sorenson3 Pro?David, if you have licensed the SV3 Pro component from Squeeze, then you should have access to it from any other QT-export capable applications. This includes FCP, QT Pro, and Cleaner. There are some installations and versions of Squeeze which require separate licensing of the SV3 Pro encoder (license should have been included in box or download). So, I would first make sure you can export from QT Pro using the Pro features of the codec. Then, I would make sure you have the latest version of the SV3 Pro codec, which is version 3.3. Updates can be downloaded at sorensonmedia.com. Third, I would ask what version of Mac OS and QT you are running. I have used 10.3.8 and 6.5.2 with no issue. Fourth, while I am sure you are, make sure you have CM 3.1 installed.
As far as access to the pro SV3 encoder from CM, you should have access to the Quality-based VBR and One-pass VBR controls. 2-pass is not available right now because of reasons mentioned above. Other controls the Pro encoder will allow are Water-marking and image smoothing. If you have access to these from CM, then everything is behavign correctly.

June 10, 2005 at 11:32 pm in reply to: Compression Master 3.1 support for Sorenson3 Pro?Hmmm, that is interesting. I never once noticed that during my beta testing of CM 3.1, but then again I usually select the fractional framerate option when losing frames for encoding. I usually do so because going from 29.97 to 14.98 produces better motion than 29.97 to 15. I’ll do some tests this weekend to verify. What is your input format?

Basically, the default install of Cleaner 6 is limited in what comparable quality you can achieve today. For Quicktime output with Cleaner, you probably want to use Sorenson Video 3, and you would want to use the Pro version of the encoder which can offer 2-pass and VBR encoding ($299). For Windows Media from Cleaner, you would want to use the encoder from Flip4Mac, which can encode to WMV-9 and offers 2-pass and VBR too ($179). There is also a WMV encoder from Popwire which offers single pass VBR encoding, and quality can be quite good as well for most sources ($29).
If the thought of spending that much to just update a dying app (Cleaner) unsettles you, then the other options are to look into a new compression suite. Sorenson Squeeze 4.1 comes with the SV3 Pro encoder, but you still have to purchase the Flip4Mac plugin to encode Windows Media ($399+$179=$578). Another compression suite, Compression Master 3.1 from Popwire, offers 2-pass VBR WMV-9 encoding, and 2-pass VBR MPEG-4 QT-compatible encoding, which is very nearly just as high quality as SV3, for a reasonable price ($399). CM 3.1 also has the most extensive set of presets for easily being able to produce quality output for beginners.

June 10, 2005 at 1:04 pm in reply to: Ben Waggoner on Digital Production Buzz tonightDavid, I’d suggest taking a look a Popwire Compression Master 3.1 for the above formats. CM’s AVC output is really amazing (about 15% better than Squeeze IMO), and their MPEG-1 encoding has improved quite a bit as well (now about 30% better than Squeeze). If there is a bug with Squeeze and Tiger, I wouldn’t hold my breadth for a fix. Popwire on the otherhand has excellent support and will work with you one-on-one to make sure there is fix relatively soon if you discover a bug. And CM 3.1 does take advantage of some of the underlying features Tiger brings, so there is less of chance of Tiger specific bugs being discovered.

June 10, 2005 at 3:54 am in reply to: Network Encoding workflow Encoding workflow Network Encoding workflowWhat issues did you have with WMV encoding and CM? Quality? Compatibility? Have you tested the newest 3.1 release? WMV encoding has been quite enhanced with MBR intellistream encoding for one.

CM has better and offers more control over its filters. CM also uses multiple threads when encoding, whereas Squeeze primarily only uses QT. This helps speed up encoding times greatly. To get a really technical answer to your questions, I suggest you email Popwire at support@popwire.com or https://www.popwire.com/feedback.php
