Winrar for storage

I doubt Winrar will seriously decrease filesize. It is a file-based compressor, working well on documents and packages. It does not have any video compressing standards though, and thus would only likely save you 1% at most. If you are in need of a compression method that offers good to great quality while retaining the ability to edit and not introduce many artifacts, then you should think about using video codec such as Motion-JPEG.

Hi, thanks for your response. I’ll tell you where I’m at.

I did a test run with winrar and my blackmagic-10 bit codec video, and it reduced the project size to less tha half (13 Gigs in about 2 hours).

I appreciate the advice to compress the video to motion JPEG, but that would mean compressing every idividual piece of video, and then re-linking them in my project before storing it away. It’s clearly a good idea, but I’m looking for a solution that takes the least amount of time possible.

Interesting… didn’t realize WinRAR could do that.

Anyway, I understood what you were trying to do as backing up you’re finished movie, not the renders and source clips. But, if you’re able to achieve 50% compression without having to mess with the codec, then by all means, use that method.

Any codec that uses entropy (aka lossless) encoding can’t be compressed much with RAR or other entropy encoding solutions. However, true uncompressed doesn’t have entropy encoding, and so 2:1 or so compression is pretty typical.

For some probably profound reason, most “interesting” real-world media, audio or video, only compress up to about 2:1 in typical use.
