well, one thing you could probably try (in order to bypass your error messege) would be to export your video without the MPEG2 codec and just use the Microsoft DV compressed AVI (or just a regular AVI if you have the disc space).

But after that, take it into encore and use encore’s encoder (i would suggest the VBR just cause the bit-rate of video does fluctuate.)

March 4, 2006 at 6:27 pm in reply to: Effect I keep seeing – WHAT IS IT?

    The effect was posterize time-

and the whole WW2 / private ryan comment, I dont think that that was a motion effect. Ive been researching that look/style for quite a while and I’ve learned that its the difference in the shutter angle in the film camera… This means that the shutter angle controls the level of motion blur between frames of film.

In saving private ryan the use of a low shutter angle made the film look like there was no blur between frames. The resulting image is very crisp, accurate, and no blur at all. (another example would be the scene in Garden State when Mark’s character pulls the locket out of the grave he was digging while the rich guy is saying ‘aldous huxtable’ – that was shot with a low shutter angle).

With movies like amelie or the big lebowski they probably used the standard shutter angle to create a smoother image so it wouldnt detract from what you are actually watching.

December 19, 2005 at 8:53 pm in reply to: Correcting heavily underexposed footage?

The very fastest way to lighten/brighten video in after effects is to

    >bring in the dark video

    >duplicate it once

    >change the top layer’s transfer mode to SCREEN

and if you need to go brighter then dublicate the screened clip.

this way you can tweak multiple layers (if need be) or edit the first layer with Curves or Levels and then do the duplicate trick. This is super fast and doesnt take as long to render out.

    Hope this helps.

November 14, 2005 at 4:21 pm in reply to: Glossy printable CD/DVD’s

I’ve purchased an Epson R200 which has a CD/DVD printable tray that works great. Its not a thermal print like your Lord of the Rings dvds but it looks great with images taken from video, psd.s that have been saved as high res JPEGs, and the software that comes with the printer’s text tool looks great too.

The printer (CompUSA) with rebates and such was 50 bucks, and the CompUSA INKJET PRINTABLE DVD’s work perfectly.

Those run a dollar a disc in spools of 25 – $25 bucks a spool.

One Pro/Con of the R200 is that you move up from the 2 inkjet cartridges to 6…. The cartridges are about 12 each. So you can look at it as –

“I have to spend about 60-70 bucks to refill all of these cartridges”

    or

“I only have to spend 12 on the individual colors if/when they run out”

So theres my 2 cents. Hope this helps.

October 28, 2005 at 1:55 pm in reply to: weird render output with magenta lines

Thats so weird that thats happening coming out of after effects. Ive had the same issue where the green and magenta lines look like stepping squares that go diagonally across my frame. It sometimes has happened even when Im exporting a video from premiere. I think it has something to do with the capabilities of the drive your rendering to.

Are you rendering out to an external drive?

I’ve found that when I disconnected my drive and rendered out to my secondary drive on my pc, there were no digital artifacts and it ran smoothly in premiere. I also defragged my machine and cleaned out all the temp files which helped out.

    hope this helps.

October 20, 2005 at 8:41 pm in reply to: Filter/Technique for adding TV like scan lines?

Check the tutorials page here at the cow. There recently was a tutorial on creating the scan lines in AE to make video look like it was playing on an old tv.

Basically you make a gride with widely spaced Y bars and then condensed X bars of the grid, then change the transfer mode, opacity and feathering. This will be fully editable so that you can make the Laptop more “screeny” than the cell phone or vice versa.

hope this helps. and check out the tutorial!

  • Well i suppose what i mean by machine control is that I’ve used protools synced to a DVC PRO deck in the past. I think we used a MOTU mixer to connect the two but im not rightly sure.

I would just like to be able to use my system with audition alongside my pd 170 (as the deck controlled by audition) to use the timecode on the tape to frame accurately record a lot of foley and VO’s. Its easy to sync up and map out where some sounds will hit that way. I think Audition has a way of doing this but I dont want to import an exported video from premiere and rely solely on my computers capabilities…

    any help is appreciated
    thanks

  • Im actually looking at getting the M-Audio Firewire 410. I’d like to be able to get the one that has machine sync so that I could slave a DV deck to Audition, but since i lack a deck i think im going to get the 410. Im used to using a DVC PRO deck alongside a protools machine. I’d like to use my version of audition and the M-audio hardware to do the same thing.

Has anyone successfully used audition with the firewire 410? I want to be able to re-record audio while monitoring the location audio along with a click track to tell the talent when their lines are coming. So my second question is – Is there a way to route multiple tracks to the headphones, and then route the Mic to another channel? Are there any latency issues?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

September 6, 2005 at 8:25 pm in reply to: Is Canon XL2 fully compatible with Pre Pro 1.5

I shot a short film on an XL2 and tried to digitize the dailies at the end of the day. When I connected the XL2 via firewire – premiere recognized it and the footage showed up on the digitize window. Once I started to dig. the footage it would dig. for about 90 seconds and then come up with a smaller error window that only said – Record error – with an option to hit ok… After doing this 6 times I decided something was not compatible with P.Pro.

I tried all the dif. capture settings within P.Pro and still the same error came up. I was really dissappointed because I was looking into getting an XL2 because of the amazing video quality and multiple shooting options. Since I’m a P.Pro user I went another direction.

I have a dell XPS system with XP pro.
3.2 GHz processor with a Gig of RAM.
    160 gig external media drive.

    Hope this helps.
