[Anhtu Vu] “There’s still a good difference between hardware and software downscaling.”

I agree with you on that…. I deliver to stations who want H.264 or MPEG 2 files and It looks so much better just sending them a Beta Sp tape downn converted right from the LHI.

Depending on how long your show is you can modify your compressor settings to CBR (constant Bit rate) and get great results. Especially if you’re dealing with anything under 60 minutes.

November 2, 2010 at 5:13 am in reply to: Set up for Uncompressed HD capture

[Matthew Troyansky] “. My question is what kind of cabling do i need to capture from tape footage shot at DVCPRO HD 108024pa using the LHi card connecting from a Panasonic AJ-HD1400 deck. I need to capture this footage uncompressed. Would i just need HD SDI cabling?”

You can use a standard BNC cable to capture video and audio from thh AJ-HD1400. With SDI you can embed the audio with the video and capture through the LHI in to FCP.

[Matthew Troyansky] “don’t think i can use the KONA LHi Breakout Cables, can I?”

You can use your breakout cables, there should be an SDI in and SDI out on the breakout cables. If you have the Breakout box even better.

Your plasma should have a DVI input. AJA makes a converter that converts HD SDI to DVI

[shonnan wibrow] “wanting to use ProRes for a sequence of clips shoot on a goPo HD at 1280×720”

Use Mpeg stream clip and convert it to pro res and play with the quality setting in stream clip to see if you can find a good marriage between quality and file size.

I forgot to mention that on my earlier post ..I agree with andrew wholeheartedly. You really don’t need to hook up the beta deck at all

October 29, 2010 at 8:33 pm in reply to: iMac Setups

[Jesse Davidson] “Part of me is considering just breaking down and getting the Mac Pro. But my pocket book would really like for me to find an iMac solution.”

    Jesse,

I was in the same boat back in April.. but I ultimately made the decision based on where wanted to be in a couple of years. I also looked at the projects in my pipeline and the shortfalls I would endure or projects I would have to turn down if I didn’t have a mac pro with the right hardware card. In the long run that was my reasoning behind the whole thing. I told myself I didn’t have to get into the highest end 8 core mac pro I just got a good one and beefed up the ram months later when I finished a few projects. I guess what I’m getting at is you can get a mac pro and grow with it. Upgrade it with video cards, IO cards and ram when the time comes. I used to install video editing systems in Miami for a dealer and i saw clients continuously make the mistake of saving now and coming back months later and say I should have gotten the computer that i can upgrade later. Believe me I understand the finance game but a computer without and upgrade path as your main editor/compositor will bite you in the long run.

October 29, 2010 at 3:35 am in reply to: Audio sync visually ok but playback is delayed

[Sachin Desai] “the dubbed audio is in wave format when I put the audio in timeline visually the waveforms seems ok but sound comes late, about 10-12 frames.”

There are a lot of post on the cow about FCP having issues with wave files. export your file from beginning to end as an Aiff and give that a try

October 29, 2010 at 12:32 am in reply to: Audio distorted upon export

[Corey Fischer] “it is audio that comes later or earlier in the timeline. It is very startling since the volume increases immensely. It continues for the remainder of the video.”

Have you check the levels on the audio that comes later in the timeline. sometimes when I work with the keyframe overlays turned on you can raise the levels of the audio without noticing while trying to drag clips around.
