I’m using a APC Smart-UPS X 1500VA Rack/Tower LCD 120V. I have the exact setup you’re running except for the cinema display. I have my mac pro with an internal Raid 5 Both 2 samsung 22 inch an a 4 Terabyte cal digit firewire 800 drive and I’m only using about 36% of the entire battery. It has an LCD screen that keeps you aware of how much power you’re using and how charged the battery is. Great product very quiet will run you a bit over 1k after taxes and shipping.

[Jesse Davidson] “Are there specific i/o solutions that you find work best in your workflow?”
Take a look at the Matrox MX02 Family of I/O boxes. They have different price ranges depending on the I/0s you would need. I also recommend the AJA IO express and the AJA IO HD

[Paul jilbert] “set camera menu to “Film Cam” in 720pn but cannot change the DEFAULT speed as there are no other options under the DEFAULT mode”
I believe you can only shoot at 24 frames with the 720p n (native mode)

Go to the view menu in FCP and go all the way to the bottom of the list and select Video playback.. choose the playback setting that best matches your new sequence settings.

[Joshua Moise] “The footage is DVCPRO HD 720p60, 23.98fps. Right now, my Kona 3 settings are 525i29.97.
Josh”
Josh,
go to the easy setup menu in FCP, select HD under the FORMAT tab, then under the USE tab all your HD settings will appear. In that list of settings should be settings that say AJA 720P 23.98. Their might be a few different flavors depending on the codec that you want to use. you might see 3 different flavors of pro res which is the most efficient, you might see uncompressed and you will also see one for DVCPROHD. Most people here on the cow would say use pro res.. I work with DVCPRO Footage a lot and I use pro res 422 HQ as my compressor. That should set everything to the proper settings for you.

p2 footage is a bit general.. was it acquired as DVCPRO HD or Avchd.. If you can tell me what the format of the footage is,and what settings you’re using with the Kona 3 that would help narrow it down.
[Joshua Moise] “A still image pops up, but it won’t play video. Anyone know what to do?”
Whenever you see that still image without the footage playing back it means that your playback settings is different from the settings you’re using in the FCP timeline

[matthew rivlin] “but the AJA site says nothing about ProRes on the Kona LHi. But it does on the IO HD. Should I be worried? Is there something I am missing?”
The LHI will capture to Pro res as well. The difference is that the IO HD hardware is built around the pro-res codec. That way you have a highly portable system that supports all the HD formats and records to a highly efficient codec. The LHI in and out will support Pro res,HDV,DVC Pro,uncompressed, etc. The LHI will also up convert down convert SD to HD and vice versa in real time. I believe the IO HD only down converts. If you’re working off MBPsthe IO HD is a great way to go.

I don’t believe that Final Cut Express supports AVCHD or HDV. You will probably need Final Cut Pro 5 and higher for those formats.

[todd mcmullen] “My thought is to go through component>aja SDI converter(HD10A)>LHI card.”
[todd mcmullen] “I do eventually need to upconvert to HD.”
Todd forgive me for cutting and pasting but I’m doing my best to answer the parts of your question I’m sure about. If you’re going to up convert with the LHI I would agree with you using the HD10A to get you into the HD SDI color space and as you mentioned you will need the extra bit depth for color correction. As for whether you should go pro res or uncompressed I think that all depends on how fast your raid is and the amount of material in your project. As for the 10 bit or 10 bit RGB someone else with a little more knowledge might be able to give some better insight

Mark in points on both the video and audio clips where the slate claps. Highlight both clips and right click. You will see an items that says merge clips. FCP will create a new permanent clip with your audio and video file linked together.
