Thanks Craig! This is a great suggestion! I have a copy of LumaFusion, love the app, but find it very challenging to maneuver on my iPhone. Still I love using it, when iMovie just doesn’t have what I want for a quick phone edit. I guess LumaFusion was ideally designed for the iPad.

I wish they had a button for “simple mode” to edit on iPhones, but with the ability to change to “advanced”. Unfortunately most of the in-house staff that go through our course would find LumaFusion daunting. However, thanks for bringing this to my attention. There are a few really techie staff that would love it. Will keep an eye out to see when it finally gets migrated over to Android. Didn’t realize they were doing that. I’m guessing there is an extra cost for the exporting option, FCPXML.

January 29, 2019 at 3:46 pm in reply to: Canons Wide DR profile on a Sony Z90V?

Thanks Chris! It’s never too late ☺ I’m always testing and adjusting things. So I really appreciate you taking the time to post. Early on I found various posts of people happily using HLG and others that said it was a delivery format only, not built for editing. But then I wondered if Sony puts it on the cameras, why? Is it just for those that want to stream or for traditional acquisition too?

I’m about ready to head off on a filming trip. When I’m back I’d like to do some tests with HLG. So I’ve downloaded that pdf. Thanks.

For now here’s a preset tweak I’m using: Black level: -5, Gamma: Cine 4, Black Gamma Range: High, Black Gamma Level: +7, Knee Mode: manual, Knee Manual Set Point: 105%, Knee Manual Set Slope: +5, Color Mode: ITU709 Matrix, Saturation: -5, Color Phase: 0, Color Depth: default, WB Shift: default, Detail level: +2, Zebra2: still playing with 80% to 90%. These settings were from an engineer and I tweaked a tiny bit based on over saturation on some colours & pure whites being a little blown out in bright daylight.

I generally like the settings, but we shoot in a fair amount of low light situations. These settings work best at 0db, high gain and I keep seeing more and more noise. At times I need to shoot wide open at 9db to 12db. It is only a 1″ sensor with fixed lens, but I’m open to other possibilities.

  • Update: this may not be the best section to post about the Sony Z90V or maybe it’s that the camera is to new. Anyway I received an answer that worked for me on another forum. In case this will help someone else here it is.

On further investigation I can reproduce your problem. Whether this is your problem or not you will have to check your REC SET menu. Under this menu you can have SIMULTANEOUS selected but have only one card recording IF under the REC BUTTON SETTING menu you have either of the two lower menu settings selected. I find you have to have the top menu line selected, the REC BUTTON A+B if you require both cards to record simultaneously. With the bottom two menu selections you can assign card recordings to either the normal hand grip record button or the top handle button… or vic a versa. To me it seems counter intuitive that if you have assigned different REC start buttons to to each card that simultaneous recording is not disabled. There you go, Sony’s lovely logic.

Thanks to you all for taking the time to post. This is super helpful. Far more than anything I could google. Hopefully it will help others too.

Thanks Craig! Have you done any tests to compare the difference in these two formats?

I’m guessing that not many people have done this kind of test since at least 4k acquisition of material seems to be the norm.

September 8, 2017 at 1:23 pm in reply to: Issues with Pre Roll Post and LTFS on OS X

Glad to hear it Sam. Hope all goes well.

This morning when I came in PRP had backed up one tape, but there were 437 verifications errors. This might be my user error, but I’ll need to do some sleuthing to see what’s up.

I purchased PRP last year based on recommendations from two other pros I met at NAB. I was looking to move past Retrospect, which at that time did not support LTFS (it probably still doesn’t). But Retrospect always worked. I think Quantum’s LTFS Manager is too simple, though I only downloaded it, got it working, but never actually did any real tests. It is free.

I will continue with PRP for now. Hopefully I can figure out the problem with the verification errors.

BTW, one option I was told is to run PRP in root. I had to look that up to figure out how to set it up. My initial test didn’t work. Since root is at a system admin level you have permissions for everything. Powerful but kind of scary if I do something wrong.

    All the best!

Update, all is working fine. The software was just telling me that the LTO5 tape was not big enough for the backup. So I just selected to span files over multiple tapes, which we did in our previous software as well, Retrospect.

September 7, 2017 at 7:32 pm in reply to: Issues with Pre Roll Post and LTFS on OS X

I feel your pain. I have a similar setup and I’m guessing you are using the latest Sierra?

I was having a related issue as PRP could not write to those same folders, but originally I was having a problem just getting LTFS to install on our MacPro running 10.12.6. It was a long complicated process trying to get support from Imagine (PreRollPost – they are a small company not able to offer much with support), then trying to work with Quantum. LTFS is installed now and working after way to many hours of fiddling. I’m actually just starting backups to an Quantum LTO5 drive as I write this. BUT I”m not done, so I could still encounter some bugs – so far so good.

So to get PRP to work I just had to tweak a few things. Apparently Apple in Sierra turned permissions off for some areas of the OS like the line you have: 307 LTFS9014E Cannot create work directory ‘/Library/Logs/LTFS’: Permission denied. So I basically went into those files/folders to give them Admin read/write permission. Some higher level folders the OS would not let me, but the folders related to Imagine and PreRollPost were not problem. Eventually I’m guessing that Imagine will need to rewrite some of their software to work around this without users having to work so hard. Quantum will have to do that for their LTFS Manager they told me.

Then for me I had to change the LTFS Mount Details to my desktop (or somewhere with read/write permission) as the default location still could not be written to. Oooops, looks like I’m not quite there as I see there is a space problem (offloading) with the backup. I think this may be my user error, but possibly this is enough to get you going.

I’ll post back when I figure out another tweak. But it is backing up now to the LTO.

November 15, 2013 at 5:03 pm in reply to: Howdy from ClipWrap

Thanks Colin, this is helpful as we are trying, as much as one can, to look forward to future workflows. We have decided to keep the original AVCHD structure in addition to the ClipWrap movs. Seems the wisest, all things considered at this juncture.

In our brief tests this new optimized tweak in ClipWrap seems to play as well on the Premiere Pro timeline as the original mts. Looks like the ClipWrap folders are a tiny bit smaller than their mts counterparts. We’re guessing that the crazy AVCHD structure adds a bit.

Thanks again for the speedy reply! Keep up the good work at divergent media. We greatly appreciate it on this end.

November 14, 2013 at 10:30 pm in reply to: Howdy from ClipWrap

We just purchased ClipWrap and saw the drop down. How will optimizing for Premiere Pro affect the use of the ClipWrap footage in other non-linear editors? What does the optimization actually do, the same as the terminal tweak?

It’s good to post this here I believe, as others will come across it and the info will be helpful. Maybe you had a link too addressing this on your site.

    Thanks!
