    Bob,

A-freakin men! And thanks for taking the time to post that. This is church for the freelance life and you can never hear this too much. I remember walking my neighborhood streets on Tues and Wed afternoons totally depressed bc I was working so hard to get work but it wasn’t happening fast enough. Within a few years I noticed that the clients I had been picking up were starting to keep me busier and busier. Then I got too busy…then I got “that” client that was a gravy train for years and I thought I had arrived. But then one December came and they sent me home bc they had no work. Whoa! That was a reality check, back to square one! But I know that what I did wrong was stop calling all the people on my list. Now I do that. The other key thing is I only keep clients that I know I can do a really good job for, some clients require more maintenance than others. That’s okay. But you have to know when one client requires more than you can give in order to keep your business life healthy and balanced. You have to kick butt on every job you do. And the paycheck…you’re finished when you get that, unless you are marketing and learning more on your unbooked days. It doesn’t come easy to anyone, but it feels great when you make it work year after year.

    Thanks! Cat Mayville

I have to put TV ratings on some shows I am working on.

I found TV ratings guidelines online (https://www.tvguidelines.org/resources/TheRatings.pdf).
But I did not see rules/templates for creating these graphics.

So I took screen grabs from the guidelines book and remade the graphics in
Photoshop. Then I sized/placed them in my FCP timeline. Is there a template/format
for creating these gfx I should know about?

    Thanks! Cat

Rafael–you are right. I was hoping there was a mechanism/setting which would tell Avid it’s okay to
re-link to original MXF file, even though it is different than a QT. But, the exported Duck sequence, once back in Avid, wants the QT’s sourced in my FCP edit.

Paul–thanks! No, I didn’t downconvert in FCP. FCP converts XDCAM files into QT’s with matching tc from MXFs (you probably know that :-). But Avid can edit with MXF’s without converting them.

I was just trying to make friends with the Avid next to me. …it’s too much drama for now. 🙂

I have XD Cam MXF files I am importing into FInal Cut, which converts these
files to Quicktimes, and then I edit.

I want to transfer this edit to an Avid, using Duck pro.

Can I export this sequence in such a way that Avid will relink sequence
to original MXF, rather than look for the Quicktime movie that was created when
Final Cut converted MXF on import?

Hope this question makes sense, thanks!

November 12, 2009 at 5:27 pm in reply to: What filters help decrease motion artifacts in MP2

adding Deinterlace and directional blur filters to clip on FCP timeline (before exporting)
helped me decrease motion artifacts in MPEG 2.

If you are using final cut add deinterlace, then directional blur at 0/amount 0.05, render then export.

I don’t know if this works in all scenarios, but if you are having this problem, this worked for me.

November 3, 2009 at 8:11 pm in reply to: Matrox CompressHD

    Craig,

I am still working on trying to get files passed for delivering Cable Labs compliant MP2’s to TVN for our networks VOD deliveries. I’ll let you know what I find out, but Episode is not even in the running at this point because their settings don’t pass test.

I was wondering about this Matrox card. It sounds like it may speed up compressions. But, would it also
improve the quality of MP2’s (if I kept export settings the same)?

What are your thoughts on adding Matrox hardware, but leaving export setting same (only because they passed the TVN test). Any added value? Thanks! Cat

I use cleaner–probably cheaper to buy that then to pay somebody. I can help you with settings once you get the software

    Thanks! Cat Mayville

  • thanks Craig. They sent me their Cable labs settings and the only thing standing in b/w us
and a file that passes the test is a field issue, which I think is easily solved. I’ll let you know how
the new cable labs settings work–the Telestream Co has been really helpful
