    Hey guys,

Just received a drive from an EX1 shoot. First XD CAM project. Am planning my workflow. Intended to cut this on MC 3.5. Was looking at the clip folders (along with viewing some of the footage with Sony’s clipbrowser software) and I notice there are quite a few .xml files – Final Cut Pro files. (Just data files, I’m sure, not the actual media.)

    Here’s the CLPR folder contents:
Individual clip folders. Inside one, for example:
    an .MP4 file (the clip)
    a .SMI file
    a .PPN file
an .XML file (Final Cut file)
    a .BIM file.

Just the presence of the XML files here and in the BPAV folder has me concerned. I’m NOT LOCKED INTO EDITING THIS ON FINAL CUT, AM I?

Much as I may like FC, I do not want to edit this project in Final Cut.

Answers and explanations are much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Paul

Sony ClipBrowser can rewrap using MXF for NLE which should work in Avid.
Sony XDCAM Transfer rewraps to MOV for FCP.

MP4 is the “generic” master. You MUST save the entire BPAV folder as the master so you have a source that can be used or rewrapped for your NLE of choice.

I’m not sure why you’d think MP4 is FCP specific. FCP uses Quicktime .MOV files.
There will come a time when that may not even be necessary though and FCP may handle .MP4

BTW you can also rewrap an FCP XDCAM EX edit master to MP4 if it needs to travel to another non Quicktime based post production workflow.

    Thanks for the reassurance.
No, I know mp4 isn’t specfic. It was just the presence of the xml files that caused me concern. I didn’t know if there was something the DP or cameraman could do in the camera to lock up the workflow from the start, and originally I was thinking of editing this in FC.

Avid just added a full self-contained XDCam workflow in 3.5. It is through a new feature called AMA (Avid Media Access). This should take care of whatever you are trying to do.

[Paul Hartel] “It was just the presence of the xml files that caused me concern.”
XML has nothing to do specifically with Final Cut Pro or even Mac OS

It’s a general purpose markup language.

Yeah XML is like HTML in the sense that it’s just a file container format- and was around long before FCP started using it.

Yes…XML is also the standard metadata format for Adobe CS4 products.

    Hey Noah,

Hopefully I’m not being too ‘nitpickey’ here, but I don’t want anyone to get confused. XML isn’t a file container, it’s a markup language that descibes data and how it should be structured in a document… at least that’s how I understand it. 🙂

    Thanks,

I have XD Cam MXF files I am importing into FInal Cut, which converts these
files to Quicktimes, and then I edit.

I want to transfer this edit to an Avid, using Duck pro.

Can I export this sequence in such a way that Avid will relink sequence
to original MXF, rather than look for the Quicktime movie that was created when
Final Cut converted MXF on import?

Hope this question makes sense, thanks!

    Thanks! Cat Mayville

I don’t know Cat, I’ve never tried that. Maybe some of the other guys who’ve used Duck can tell you. I know the transfer should bring everything over, and link up. Did you downconvert before you edited in FC? That the reason you want to link to the original MXF?

The AMA transfer in Avid, by the way, is a breeze. Love it.

I don’t think that will works. Even if the picture and sound is the same, the media is completely different.
Avid will look for QT files but will find MFX.
