  • [Steve Bentley] “Ah, right: tailoring it to get good numbers. That would never happen in this day and age would it? You’ve been watching too much “fake” news! ( I couldn’t resist)”

I didn’t mean in that conspiracy kind of way. I just meant that if you make a test that requires a lot of CPU and then you go and put in the fastest single core available, you can’t really say you’ve “tailored” to get the “best AE machine”. To be honest I haven’t looked into what comprises their benchmark. I’m just saying don’t brag about beating other people’s numbers, when it seems obvious you can do it.

About what you said of AE feeling outdated. I share the feeling, every aspect you cited, I’ve seen it evolve and happen during all these years. TBH I haven’t used any of the other compositors, but I use C4D a lot. 5 minutes with that and every other adobe product seems lackluster.

  • [Steve Bentley] “beat their numbers because we built ours for just over $3k CAN$!”

That’s a little over what we usually spend on hardware here, but it’s not a lot and if you end up beating their scores. Its actually pretty good, more than I expected for that price.

  • [Steve Bentley] “I didn’t understand your comment:
But scoring higher on a benchmark that they created seemed a cheap tactic.”

They had Puget create a benchmark then asked Puget to beat their scores on that same benchmark. Puget knows exactly what the benchmark needs! That’s not your everyday usage…

  • My first problem with that video is who uses JUST AE? Perhaps someone highly departmentalized in a relatively big company. Its certainly not my case.

For example a RTS 2080 GPU is a total overkill – budget wise – if you stay with the basic editing/tools. Yet it may not be enough to do hardcore stuff with Element 3d and god forbids you end up using a multi GPU renderer for any extra application you may use. If money had no objections, they should have taken the best single GPU. those 3GB more could mean loading a model to VRAM that otherwise may not load on 8GB.

AE has an actual pretty simple go to formula. Get more ram and a higher clock CPU. They got that right. But scoring higher on a benchmark that they created seemed a cheap tactic.

And since I live in Brazil, where you have to consider triple the price most of you guys pay for parts (to put things into perspective). I’m usually more interested in bang for bucks than raw power.

Yes, if you end up using too much of the trees canopies to create that Y position, the actual ground will drift a bit from the plane. But if you create a ground plane origin (in the tracker, before creating a camera), and normalize the camera’s position in AE’s space (meaning rotating everything until the XYZ axis kind of align). It should be easier to slowly change that Y value until you minimize the drifts. If things aren’t normalized sometimes altering Y directly can mean moving it in X or Z or both. (you can still use the Y handle on the viewport, that will work).

But still, if you place landscape upon ground AND trees, you wont avoid a small drift I guess.

    Good luck!

Well, first things first. Are you creating a 3d camera from the footage, right? Not just tracking motion?

If you are, after the camera is solved, the points should have 3 coordinates. You can average those to get a middle point for your mesh (if you are unable to get that point specifically in the first place). IT should just sit there. The parts that drift some should be adjusted in the model (to compensate the height differences) or we have to accept the fact that the terrain would be leveled during construction and the drift in the simulation is a result to just that.

You should, if possible, post your tests too. It’s hard to see the problems just mentally.

Edit: After a second read I realized you are adding terrain to the outer parts right? So lets make sure that you got a proper track first. Then we can try to adjust it. But It helps if I could see a test.

[Jack Hilkewich] “The real camera has some barrel distortion. Another question is, since I will try and minimize the distortion of the video footage should I even try to add distortion to my After Effects camera in order to match it?”

Yes, if we were talking about photos, I’d say remove the distortion prior to working with it. But in a video, its perhaps easier to add the distortion to the post work than cropping the adjusted footage. I’d say that adding the distortion is a must for realism (if some relevant distortion is present, of course) and no too much trouble if you’re using it always full frame. If you happen to move/scale some shots around it may become troublesome to adjust the distortion accordingly (since I’d use an adjustment layer for it).

The videos seems to be unavailable so I can’t comment based on that.

[Christopher East] “Is there a way (an expression perhaps?) to get four separate anchor points on each CORNER of a solid and then connect each of those anchor points to individual nulls?”

That is essentially what the corner pin effect does. But if you need to get a null to link a 3d object to it (instead of 2d transformations only) I guess you could just average those 4 points to get something that’s placed in the middle.

Try to fix that link and I’ll come up with some expression that does that.

I’m not very technical on that aspect also but I think that other than any distortions that your lens may add to the footage (such as fisheye vs normal). Setting a camera to that same length is about it.

What do you intend to do in AE and what’s coming up odd/wrong?

Is that wiggle present when you preview in AE?
