February 15, 2008 at 9:24 pm in reply to: AVID DNxHD render, alpha not right

My codecs from Avid were from March 15th, 2007, there are apparently newer ones out as of January 8th, 2008 — AvidCodecsLE_1.8MAC.zip. I updated to that collection and now the alpha that is put out by after effects is correctly based on the comp’s alpha.

    Thanks,

it would be nice if when you added an effect to a layer or when you select the text tool that the program would automatically switch to your layout for that tool rather than adding in the new panel to your current workspace. I’ve had to get used to switching workspaces and then using the tool. Also, only have three shortcuts for workspaces is limiting. I need maybe five — at least. Animation, Effect, Text, what I call “Render Queue”, & Paint…

it’s actually even easier than this

    1. make a perfect circle mask by picking the circle mask tool clicking on the center of the comp & while dragging hold down the apple & shift keys. set a mask shape keyframe

    2. move ahead in the timeline and click on “Shape” next to the “Mask Shape” attribute. In the dialog the comes up choose “Rectangle”

    & that’s it….unless I’m missing something

  • You can build the special color bars in AE using ramp, mosaic, colorama, & then a little precomping & some masks.

For morphing transitions, maybe Sapphire_DistortBlur using a fractal noise image map.

I’m pretty stumped on the tiling/kaleido look in the middle of the image at about 1.5 sec on the first
    movie.

applying fast blur & colorama with a different output cycle preset like “Golden 2” to video gives it a look sort of like the smeary colors

    that’s all I’ve got.

In this post I included info on settings for rendering from AE to go into an AVID system…
    https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_read_post.cgi?forumid=2&postid=871896

The advantage of compressing on the AE end and not on the Editor’s end — I’ve noticed to be twofold: A) it should not make much of a difference in your compression time on your machine but on the AVID machines if you set up the file in the codec the editor is editing in then it can reduce thier import time by 2/3 or more. B) I’ve noticed especially with the AVIDs that AE handles compressing to the DV format better than the AVID does compressing the Animation or whatever codec to the Meridien or Avid DV codec.

We were sending over highly detailed & animated map renderings to our AVID newscutters and they took 10-15 minutes to bring into the AVID system when we used to render to the animation codec. The text also looked blurry & certain small lines had a bit of artifacting/jitter around them. Compressing on the map program’s end to the AVID DV codec meant that the editors could import the map in about minute & removed the problems with the blurry text & artifacting.

You can try my Output Module & Render Settings presets at: https://fusinatodesign.blogspot.com/2006/03/settings-ae-c4d-settings.html

March 10, 2006 at 12:35 am in reply to: fix to 7.0 problem for renderfarm macs

    here’s another minor bug fix:

When you install AE 7.0 RE on a mac & you also have a professional version installed — you may have problems calling up AE 7.0 RE in your applescript. This is because even though the application’s name in finder is “Adobe After Effects 7.0 RE” if you “get info” on it, the name of the file in “Name & Extension” is actually “Adobe After Effects 7.0.app”. Manually change it to “Adobe After Effects 7.0 RE.app” and your mac will now be able to differentiate between the Prof. & the Rend. Eng. versions.

On computers that we rotate into the renderfarm when not in use we need to have both the Prof & the RE versions installed & that’s how I ran into this “gotcha”.

did you try importing the project into another one rather than opening it?
