Thanks John, Though, that was the answer I didn’t want to hear:)I would assume I should “clamp” things down after I apply the “look” I want?
Here is the scenario, I am editing in the field, no chance of having access to any calibrated monitors, especially no broadcast monitors. I was hoping I could add one of the film looks and then just send it to my client, then I would know what they are getting (visually). What about adding a “look” then throwing Broadcast Colors on it? that should keep things looking “correct” and still have a nice visual feel.

I have used many slideshow programs and usually use Proshow but I was just looking for a good excuse to get more “Vegas” time, especially working with stills and certain effects.
-
Of course my monitors are calibrated!
I read that Vegas has trouble with stills using the 32bit spaces verse 8bit. So I imported them(using srgb jpegs)into a 8bit timeline and they look much better.
Bob,
I also crop to 16×9 in Lightroom, but I leave them large so I can do some pans and zooms. Well, I do resize to fit on a 4k timeline (even though they probably will only be outputed at 1080p). I will try the PNG export option. Have you ever considered a broadcast monitor or the MXO mini for grading the footage in Vegas instead of your monitor that you use for stills, obviously you would need two then, one for video and one for stills.
Thanks for the advice, Cows rule! -
Thanks John,
Makes sense, being a photographer and a printmaker, the thought of turning off the color management is a little scary 🙂 -
Julia,
What type of files are you working with? A hard drive will often begin to perform poorly when it gets close to being full. Many computer geeks say that your hard drive should never be over 75% of its capacity. -

May 11, 2009 at 12:24 am in reply to: What are the best Pro Video Cameras today under 12KI would go with a RED over any of those high end Panasonic or Sony cameras. The logical step above a EX3 with a NANO Flash would be the RED One (until the Scarlet arrives).

May 8, 2009 at 10:42 pm in reply to: What are the best Pro Video Cameras today under 12KB&H has the NANOFLASH listed at $3700. Can it record at any frame rate? 1080 60p at 100mbps or even 50mbps would just be killer. Or is it limted by the camera’s max base ability? which for the ex3 is 1080 30p or 720 60P.

May 7, 2009 at 9:59 pm in reply to: What are the best Pro Video Cameras today under 12KThe Sony ex1 and ex3 are some of the only cameras under 10K that are “approved” for broadcast by many “big” networks. That speaks for itself.
But the industry is about to change, just like the still photography world did a few years ago. The prices of video cameras are so inflated it’s disgusting, and they know it, Red Cinema has proven this. When the RED Scarlet becomes a reality, all the bid boys will need to change their entire systems.
They all have the technology to create world class cinema and ENG cameras at about a tenth of the price, but they will milk their insane profits to the bitter end. So even if you have no interest in RED and their cameras, you should pray for the Scarlet because that will be when the big boys will start to change their ways.
Invest in a new system at your own risk (but if you have to, I would go with the XDCAM EX cameras).

May 7, 2009 at 9:00 pm in reply to: Building i7 for Sony Vegas – would appreciate inputI have the i7 and it works great. You should use the ASUS P6t Deluxe motherboard which is made to work with the i7.
I also have 12GB of Corsair RAM and a the GFORCE 280 video card.

I just built a new PC for Vegas editing
I7 8 core with ASUS PT6 deluxe motherboard
12 Corsair GB ram
2TB (three different hard drives)
Nvidia GeForce 280 1GB video card
Vista 64bitCost me $1,900 to build.
Runs Vegas great, however, some issue still remain when editing AVCHD files, its not the machine, its Vegas. Vegas 9 will have full support of AVCHD files and hopefully the remaining issues will be resolved.
So if you are editing AVCHD files directly, wait and see how 9 performs, you may not need a new computer.
