  • Building i7 for Sony Vegas – would appreciate input

I will be building a new computer in June. I presently have a P4, so it will be a very nice upgrade. My primary uses will be for video editing and encoding (Sony Vegas), digital photography (possibly CS4 in the future), encoding/transcoding (Proshow Producer and podcasts to DVD for family), and other general Office and internet usage. I do not do any gaming. I am trying to build a quiet machine (super silent is not necessary). I am a multitasker who typically tries to do too much at once.

I would appreciate your feedback on my proposed build. I also have some specific questions below.
    • CPU – Intel i7-920
    • CPU cooler – Scythe MUGEN-2 with Zalman STG1 thermal compound
    • Ram – ocz platinum 3x2Gb
    • Motherboard – Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P – for the better TI firewire controller than many i7 boards
    • Video Card – Asus EN9600GT Silent ($80) or Gigabyte 4850 GV-R485MC-1GI ($145) – I am having a hard time here – would like a card that offers Adobe CS4 acceleration – since I don’t play games, I would prefer a card that is not noisy and does not consume gobs of power
    • Case – Antec P182
    • Power Supply – Corsair HX-620
    • OS & Application HD – OCZ Vertex 120gb (I’m splurging here)
    • (2-3) additional hard drives for scratch, workspace, and storage – looking at Western Digital Caviar Green WD6400AACS 640GB and/or the WD Caviar Black 1TB – maybe a combination of both types of drives
    • TV Tuner Card – DViCO FusionHDTV7 either Gold RT or Dual Express
    • Additional Fans – Scythe SY1225SL12M 120mm “Slipstream” Case Fan 1200 RPM; Scythe S-FLEX SFF21D 120mm Case Fan 800 RPM; Scythe GentleTyphoon D1225C12B3AP-13 120mm Case Fan
    • OS – Plan to use Windows 7 RC until it becomes available for purchase. Vista works fine on my notebook, but I don’t want to pay for Vista and later pay to upgrade to W7.
    • (2) Monitors – already purchased (2) 24” Dell 2408WFP monitors – they have DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort options
    • Keyboard, Mouse, DVD-Writer has already been purchased.

    Questions
    • Motherboard – should I consider saving some money with the UD3R? ($60 savings)
    • Hard drive – I like the quieter and lower power consuming WD Green drives, but I am concerned what I will be compromising performance-wise when I am doing video editing work.
    • Hard drive – what would you recommend for hard drive suspension?
    • Cables – Do you have any cables or other odds and ends that you would recommend that I purchase? I know I will need SATA cables for the drives. I am not sure about Y-splitters for the fans, etc.

I am open minded to your feedback. The only thing I am really set on is the i7-920 processor.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I have the i7 and it works great. You should use the ASUS P6t Deluxe motherboard which is made to work with the i7.

I also have 12GB of Corsair RAM and a the GFORCE 280 video card.

I presently have an Asus motherboard for my P4-2.8C and have been pleased with it. I have read many positive things about the Asus P6T. However, for firewire performance, I have read that the TI chipset on the Gigabyte boards are far superior to the VIA chipset on Asus and most other i7 boards. There are many glowing reviews about the Gigabyte i7 boards as well.

I am trying to decide between 12GB and 6GB RAM. That is a nice video card but it is probably overkill for a non-gamer that is just looking for CS4 acceleration. It will be interesting to see if future versions of Vegas take advantage of GPU acceleration.

I appreciate the input and advice. Please keep it coming.

Also maybe it’s not true anymore but in the past I’ve had a lot of problems with VIA chipsets and Vegas back when I was building my own editing machines. I preferred the Intel over the VIA’s.

Like I said maybe things have changed but just thought I’d mention it.

Any recommendations for keyboards for digital video work and/or a shuttle? I am just an amateur, so I don’t need professional tools.

I picked up my first tablet for digital photography work.

    Thanks,
    Steve
