    Log and Capture window…

    Device Control…

Change it to non controllable device. — then use CAPTURE NOW.

Though… you might want to just dub the whole tape to another one and do use the timecode if you need to go back for any reason and recapture.

EDIT: Michael beat me to it!!

[Rui Pereira] “But for a better workflow it’s better to use the same codec in the output moveis from combustion as in the fcp sequence? and the dv codecs for CG suck big time. “

You are going to have to compress it somewhere to get to DVD

If the final version is set to go to DVD and to TV in standard def AND (AND!!!!) you’ve already done all the compositing in Combustion then just either export from there or convert them using QTPro to DV/NTSC or PAL and edit with a normal sequence setting for DV.

    Now…

If the ENTIRE movie was done in Combustion and you are just editing the output files in FCP together and you aren’t adding any SD material then you might think about exporting in some higher resolution (apple prores) and hope that maybe the singular conversion to mpeg2 will (might) look better… but I doubt it.

Look thru the options available to you in your sequence settings for editable codecs and use one of those. Stay away from editing in animation (if you can) and any type of h264 compression.

    Good luck,

There is a lot of information (pixels) you are compressing to your video which is NOT 1200×1000.

A few things you can try.

Make sure the render is rendered ALL the way. No dynamic preview.

Resize the image in Photoshop to somehting smaller. Photoshop’s dithering is much better than FCP.

Keep it 1200×1000 and 100% in the timeline and then just pan around using the Motion tab.

    Good luck,

Maybe… Capture Now uses the preference setting for maximum time of capture now (or something like that…) – if you have it set for 60 minutes it’s going to set aside 12 gigs of space right at the start. Unlike Log and Capture which will only set aside the space needed to do a clip.

    1) Try setting a different scratch drive
    2) Try lowering your capture now setting (user preferences)

Timecode breaks are a pain for FCP.

Make sure you cue it up and put the record point a good 5 seconds AFTER the timecode break.

Or… capture the whole tape via capture now and dump BACK to tape. This will give you consistent timecode and you’ll be fine after that.

    Good luck though…

Hmmm… in AE it is VERY easy. Command H, isn’t it?

You could try one of the following ways…

    1) Zip the old graphic and replace the new graphic with the same name in the FINDER

    2) Select the graphics on the timeline and (hmmm… somewhere) make them offline – maybe under modify menu or the contextual menu… then, when you select them again to RECONNECT tell it to SEARCH for the file and deselect the option to search exact name. Then, just point it to the new graphic file.

Both of those should work, though I’ve never tried it.

    Good luck,

Did it work when you changed it to non controllable device?

Are you trying to capture the first 5 seconds of the tape?

Does your tape have timecode breaks?

    The regular 29.97.

If you want to go to 23.98 you should have shot in 24pA… however, you CAN use Cinema Tools to remove the 3.2 cadence and edit in 24fps.

Check the manual in CT for how.

If it is 24p it isn’t interlaced…. it is combined – there is a difference.

    So…

Just capture using a simple easy setup 29.97 DV/NTSC setting.

You’ll get 3 progressive and 2 combined frames every 5. That’s what 24p means. (kinda)

    Good luck,
