Never tried X so can’t weigh in on that (scared off from the start and haven’t read anything to date to entice), but I’ve been very impressed with PPCC on a 2010 MacPro. Very stable and very, very fast (compared to FCP7). For what it’s worth I think the K5000 is unnecessary. I upgraded to a GTX 770 4GB from macvidcards and that made for a noticeable bump in speed. Cost about $680 I believe. And I love the ease of the CC subscription.

  • I’ve used PrP CS6 and CC on the same iMac you have with media on a Pegasus TB Raid 5. No issues at all. All Adobe apps stable. And as has been stated by others, there’s no reason I can think of why any kind of hard drive would be “unsupported” by the CC apps. In other words, your problem lies elsewhere than TB.

I have some small (but annoying) gripes (ie. fades to black when using GPU hardware acceleration are not smooth), but on the whole it’s a great NLE. Fast, flexible, and stable on a MacPro 5,1. Love the UI. Monitoring using Kona LHi is smooth. I’ve been using the DNxHD 220x sequence preset for all edits. No transcoding of media. Render then export using sequence settings using preview render files to an MXF file and it FLIES. AME is also very fast compressing the MXF to MP4, etc.

I have the GTX 770 (from macvidcards) and it works beautifully – except for similar problems as you describe. I’ve had to create custom fades to black (for christsakes!) to get them to function properly with GPU hardware acceleration turned on. I’ve also had the same problem with the Quadro 4000 (Mac). Very frustrating.

    Love PrP CC though.

Dont know what your system specs are but FWIW I’ve had no issues cutting with raw AVCHD footage from start to finish (including FX and grading) in PrP. You don’t even need to rewrap.

Don’t know about X but haven’t had performance issues in PrP with synced or merged clips. Perhaps run a little workflow test and see which is less painful. I get not wanting to cut with 8-10 tracks. But you could sync them all, then eliminate those you don’t want as you work through the edit and then, once you’ve got picture lock, use match frame to drop back in the tracks you eliminated before sending to sound post. It just makes me uncomfortable cutting before syncing, but maybe that’s just me.

Completely agree – sync before cutting. I have trouble truly evaluating an edit without the “real” sound in there. Plus in many cases you’ll have fewer clips to sync before they’re all cut up, especially if you’re cutting syllables here and there. After syncing I usually create merged clips so that I can match frame. Be careful with creating multiclips from merged clips though. With just 2 cameras I prefer not to have multiclips anyway.

Regarding NLEs, PrP CC now has an option for syncing using “audio” which then analyzes the waveforms (assuming your cameras have reference audio of course).

For an incredibly expansive suite of software that has a great track record, for people that are presumably making a living off of it I don’t understand the angst over $50/month.

I feel like they’d specify if that were the case. “KONA family of products” seems all inclusive to me. There’s no saying they won’t change that down the road but I read it to mean you’re safe for the next round of Adobe software updates.
