December 7, 2005 at 2:40 am in reply to: Using Apple Compressor to batch process for Video iPod>I was using the compressor preset ‘web download quicktime 7 compatible, H.264 300K’ thinking I was producing video ipod compatible podcasts. Not so. Check out these links. compressing using the method described in the second link produces videos compatible on the video ipod

November 5, 2005 at 4:36 am in reply to: Just did an OSX update to 10.4.3 now FCP 5.03 wont openI’ve got an uptime of 3 days now with latest OS & FCP. w/ 10.4.2 seems like I had to restart every 2 days or so to get rid of slugishness. would highly recommend 10.4.3. seems to fix a lot in OS performance area. 5.0.3 still has 2x speed timeline & mouse movement bug though 🙁 … and cmd-option drag still moves windows around – in my opinion a user-interface flaw that should be reverted to 4.5 behaviour.

I’ve got a G5 I edit with, and another editor on a G4 via gigabit that mounts all my hard drives on her desktop (various serial 1.5, FW 400&800 and internal drives. works fine for editing, she gets dropped frames occasionally when capturing via a DV conversion device like canopus. scratch disk is always set to my drives so that render files are never lost, I can pick the project up anytime. Only thing to watch out for is to never have the same project file open on both machines at the same time. Oh, and you may want a dedicated machine to act as a file server. works best when higher speed HD’s are used (serials usually).

Mine’s very buggy too w 10.4.2 & FCP 5.0.2. slows down after a few days- requires a restart & other apps crash ocasionally…

I’d say hold off for now. With clean install, memory management dosen’t seem the best in 10.4.2 w/ 5.0.2. after about 3 days up, sequences start slowing down & require a restart of FCP. Some freezes with photoshop I never had under 10.3.6
I’ve got an odd bug with 5.0.2- playing the timeline at double speed & moving the mouse at the same time, playback stalls out- also the audio isn’t as smooth when listening at 2x speed as it used to be in 4.5
keep in mind that OS 10.4.3 due out later this month is purported to fix a bunch of bugs in the OS.

My fav I use all the time is ggg, hilighting just a portion of a clip to do a test render on that section. Also, g, hilighting a bunch of stacked clips edit points & extending them with numeric keypad or e key.

Thanks, I’ll try some testing with those codecs

It’s just the default install of WME9 from microsoft, on windows XP professional. Always has supported mov’s for me… with under 2 GB source files, that is. I also put quicktime on it.
Still though, does anyone know if it’ll process movs or avi’s above 2GBs? I haven’t had any luck- and haven’t read about this problem on fourms though.
and about flip4mac and popwire- I’m trying to offload compression to a cheap PC to free up rendering & other compression tasks on the G5 system… and procoder works fine with +2Gb files, but was giving me jerky results at low bitrates that WME handled quite smoothly…

No, I’ve got several movies on the web right now that were .mov source file compressed with WME. it dosen’t show as a source file type in the selector, but just type the file name in or *.mov, and you can compress .mov’s just fine.
