Hello. Unfortunately I’m going to have to be the downer here. 😒 I actually do think A.I. is going to replace a lot of the work done by graphic designers/motion designers. What I’ve seen of Open A.I.’s DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and the like is insanely impressive. Of course this is already in a long running discussion that “machines will never be able to…[fill in the blank].” The game of Go was considered to be too complicated for computers to understand then Alpha Go beat the world champion in a well publicized series of matches. I’ve heard people like Vladimir Chopine from Geek At Play studios say that he uses A.I. as a “starting point” (I think he uses Midjourney) for his artwork, but more and more I think it is the end point itself. If you can type in “a lemur surfing in the style of Monet” and the software can produce that as well as totally photo-realistic images, then I think any human designer has a run for their money.

Boris FX’s new version of Silhouette does use Stable Diffusion and right away it could be argued that it eliminates a Photoshop artist in a pipeline. Amazingly though, product head Marco Paolini did say that they are still working on having the software automatically do roto work, but I think it is just a matter of time.

Absolutely. The price is definitely right! It’s similar to when Apple dropped the price of Shake from $3000 to $500 and I went out and purchased it immediately. This is even more of a no-brainer. And although I love Nuke, the pricing is obviously ridiculously steep (I did have access to it through FXPHD’s VPN software support and now have installed the non-commercial version).

As a matter of fact, the day BMD released the Mac version, a rep from The Foundry called me about purchasing, so they are actually shaken up by this. Also, I just attended a local user group meeting with editor Alan Bell (SPIDER MAN, THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE, etc.) in which he revealed that his main workflow involves Avid Media Composer and Fusion to a great extent. And VFX guru Doug Trumbull said that he uses Fusion extensively because, at the time, “it was half as expensive as Nuke.”

Oh I see, from reading the thread below this one I discovered that the trick is to deselect the “Fusion” keyword at the top of the forum. That’s much better!

Actually I discovered with this new Beta 3 release BMD have added Primatte to the Mac version of Fusion. Wel done! 🙂

Actually I guess I’m sort of mixed on Apple’s new design strategy as well. I don’t know how long it took me to tweak the settings in Mountain Lion to tame that kitty to make it behave more like Snow Leopard (actually I do have a Snow Leopard partition on my MacBook Pro as well, but that is mainly due to discovering that I still had a couple of PPC apps like FXHome’s VisionLab Studio). As for the “Dark Linen” BG, don’t even get me started on that travesty. Every time I open up Motion 5 (which otherwise I love) that BG in the Canvas irritates me beyond belief even I suppose it is a stupid little detail. I even downloaded the Logonix app to change the BG of the login screen.

[Bret Williams] “I mean, they brought us the “desktop.” “

That’s true of course, well with Steve “borrowing” the “paperless office” paradigm from Xerox PARC. And it is true that “classic” FCP is slightly skeuomorphic with its “burnished aluminum” panels and scrubber wheel, etc. I guess I wouldn’t mind so much if Apple just gave you a choice, i.e. if in Mavericks you could toggle the “skins” of the Calendar and Notes apps to either “computer streamlined” or “steam-punk retro” or whatever.

Having said all that I’m sick of my dumb-phone and am seriously thinking of purchasing one of the new candy-flavored iPhones, either the Blueberry or the Lime one.

Yeah, there is still a Commotion and a Shake forum here at the Cow pasture…just in case there are people still using these EOLed apps.

Oh wow, that is some great stuff…the new Motion Rigging/Widgets reminds me of the Macro functionality in Shake and the “Gizmo” functionality in Nuke.

Well basically Apple had integrated some of the keying, tracking, and optical flow technologies from Shake into Motion.
